Very cool design
I homeschool my 10-year-old son, and this Thames & Kosmos Science Advent Calendar will be a great way to add some hands-on experiments to our daily routine. Last year, we did the National Geographic Advent Calendar, and that one was a huge success, so I'm glad that I found another with a science theme. One issue that I've had with advent calendars in the past is that the instruction booklet will usually take a lot of the surprise out of it, because it's hard not to see pages for other days. This one is different because the instructions for experiments and additional scientific information are printed inside the boxes. Certain experiments have QR codes that need to be scanned to access additional content. The design is really clever because they pack a lot of information in, and the outside of the boxes are fun and colorful. A booklet is included, but it just gives parents an introduction to the kit and safety information. So, it's definitely more fun if you like the surprise element. But, one drawback is that some experiments require extra household items like rice, lemon juice, vinegar, bowls, cups, paper towels, and scissors. Those are only listed inside the boxes, so you'll need to open them up ahead of time if you want to avoid running into any where you don't have the materials needed. These seem like fairly simple experiments. However, there is a warning that it is only recommended for ages 8 and up, and parental supervision is required. Some warnings include the use of small parts, long cords, sharp edges, strong dyes, and plaster. You should also take care to make sure your table and floor are not easily damaged or are covered. For some experiments, it would be a good idea to wear old clothes that can get stained. See the attached photo for more.I'm pretty excited about this, because it has some experiments we have not done before, and we have done a lot of science kits. I think this is a great advent kit for older kids.

Great advent or "just because" experiment set
The Thames & Kosmos Science Advent Calendar is intended to be opened one box at a time starting December 1. However, we're a science loving family and it's perfectly fine if you want to use this as a non-December set, either opening once a day or every so often. One important thing to note is that you must do the activities in order, starting on day 1, because some days you'll need to re-use an item that was found in a previous box. For example, on day 7 your kiddo will make an impression of a dinosaur fossil, but they need supplies from boxes 3 and 5 as well as the current day. Speaking of boxes, they are wonderfully made-up boxes with a beautiful themed colorful picture on the outside that hints of the activity inside. The box unfolds to have directions printed on the inside and two flaps - one "check it out" telling a little about the history and the other flap tells the science behind what you're doing. Some have QR codes for more info. Underneath all the different shaped boxes is a chutes and ladder style game. My son is almost 8 and this is the perfect age for this calendar. I am not sure if a teenager would love it. There is a parents and supervising adults brochure included which has some instructions and warnings, but it doesn't contain all the extra ingredients that you'll need. It hints at vinegar, lemon juice, table salt, rice, and oats are among some of the ingredients. Overall, this is a fun set for budding scientists. This is volume 2. Our family did not order Volume 1, so I can’t say how it compares to the previous version.

exciting advent calendar
This is one of the most unique advent calendars that I have ever seen and will be the biggest hit of the holiday! Each day includes a new experiment to do in its own little box which included materials and directions. Only common household materials are needed. Fun for a wide range of ages!

Very cool--but be prepared
The media could not be loaded. The Thames & Kosmos Science Advent Calendar Vol 2 | 24 Daily STEM Experiments in Chemistry, Biology & Physics, Countdown to Winter Holiday Celebrations | Fun, Wholesome Family Tradition (2024 Version)My observations (see unboxing video):This is a very nice kit. It's all made of stiff paper, so it's not rugged, but it's plenty sturdy for its purpose. Each activity is interesting and pretty well explained. The instructions and packaging are all written in clear English (this wasn't imported from a foreign-speaking country). As other reviewers mentioned, you might want to open each day's box a few days early. Even though many of the boxes contain necessary items (plaster powder, miniature dinosaur, a yo-yo, etc.), inside the box is the only place to see what additional items are required--usually simple household things, like warm water, but occasionally you might need to add something simple to your grocery list.Another reviewer made a good point, that you could enjoy the 24 activities without using them as a countdown to Christmas. Occasionally, a "later" activity (each box is numbered) will need an item from an "earlier" activity, so don't lose them.
