This movie is very contemporary!
First of all, the vendor Rarewaves got me the movie ahead of schedule by more than a week. Well Done. Now the movie, made in 1969, replays the military "Junta" the occupied Greece in the late '60's.This is a reversal, because now the left runs America, but many actions are the same. A political spokesperson, played by Yves Montand, is in town to make a speech regarding peaceful (really) protest against an increasing nuclear world movement. He is assassinated by the right wing government via a flunky who is coached by a high police official. The parallels are striking. The soundtrack by Mikis Theodrakis is very moving.

Great film, but not the best transfer
If you don’t own a blu-ray player or better, this movie is great. If you’re used spoiled on HD, the colors here are a bit washed out and there is a bit of digitation in some scenes

Yes it is "contemporary"
Let's see: Z is about a left-wing deputy who is giving a speech the far-right junta doesn't like, he is murdered by far-right thugs paid for by higher-ups in the military police ranks. Although the guilty are eventually indicted, they escape justice when the prosecutor is mysteriously "dismissed" and witnesses "disappear." A reviewer here claims that this is "left-wing" America in 2022. Obviously he has a skewed vision of this country. No doubt Costa-Garvas would remake this film as Trump World, where lies, violence (remember January 6?), people escaping justice for their crimes (think Trump escaping justice for 34 felony counts and his personal judge dismissing the prosecutor in the classified documents case). Yeah, we are seeing Z today alright.
