Cole & Mason Granite Mortar and Pestle, 7-Inch, Black

Well made. Heavy duty. I hadn't expected this to be as large nor as heavy as it is. It seems to be of good quality. Just be prepared, this has heft.

This 7 inch mortar set is fantastic! It is hefty and doesn't move when you are grinding your spices. Also has just the right rough texture inside which works much easier then a smooth inside finish like porcelain mortars have. When you get it you have to remove the grit by grinding the pestle in a circular motion inside the mortar and then rinse out the grit. Then oil it inside, ready to use. I use all whole spices especially cumin and coriander and peppercorns and this can turn them to powder in no time with some good elbow grease. The fragrance emitted by doing this is so rewarding and everything tastes so much better with fresh hand ground spices. The size is really perfect and this will hold 4 cups of water filled to the very top. It's quite heavy but managable to rinse out without an engine hoist like my 36 pound marble one! This mortar alone weighs 12 pounds not including the pestle. It stands 5 inches tall and 7 inches across top. The inside measures 3.5" deep and 5 inches across top of the inside. The side thickness at the top is about 15/16" so this is a nice hefty substantial mortar and pestle. The pestle is about 8" long. I use this almost every day and find it works much better then my other two, it's just a perfect usable size and works like magic. I've used many different mortars in everything from wood, marble, cast iron, soapstone and porcelain but this granite beauty is so well balanced, very solid and doesn't move on the counter and the texture inside works by far the best. You will not be disappointed, I highly recommend this set.

GREAT PRODUCT I USE IT TO PULVERIZE SOME MINERALS LIKE MAGNESIUM ,SELENIUM CHROMIUM ,ETC THAT COME IN A TABLET PLUS I ADD MORE THINGS TO IT AN GIVES ME EXCELENT RESULT ...THE POWDER WONT STIK TO THE GRANITE AND WITH JUST SOME LITTLE WATER I DESOLVE DE LEFTOVER IN IT SO IS A GREAT PRODUCT FOR THAT MATTER.....

This is a big, well made granite set. It grinds very well and is easy to clean. It looks great on the counter as well!

The stone pieces came off and mixed with the food that I was prepared to my baby !!!!

Saw this in England, and asked the clerk how much does it weigh? I think she weighed the mortar without the pestle. It is quite substantial. I checked on line and discovered that I could get it delivered at home at pretty much the same price. Love it. Toasted some fennel seeds and then ground them using this M&P. Very little effort required due to the size of the mortar and the weight of the pestle. It lives on the counter as almost a piece of art. It is beautiful!

Super disappointed!! I bought this from Amazon for my partner as a Christmas gift. It's been great, looks awesome on the counter and has worked like a charm the couple of times we used it. This afternoon though, he was crushing sesame seeds, and all of a sudden, the pestle shattered in two. This happened out of nowhere, with very little force (especially for a mortar and pestle!!) and it left shards of granite in the food. The pestle looked fine when it arrived, and has done nothing but sit on a counter since then.So annoyed, I thought Cole and Mason has a lifetime guarantee but the Amazon return policy just says it's beyond the return date. I see this has happened to a few other people in the reviews, so I would strongly suggest you DO NOT BUY! Now unless I can get this replaced, I just own a very heavy, very expensive bowl.

As usual with Amazon, this was delivered right on time with no fuss. It works really well. I love the size and weight because it stays steady while being used. So far it is meeting all of my expectations.

This mortar and pestle set makes an impressive statement in my kitchen. I should note though, that the reason the pestle has such a big handle-portion, is that so one can get a good grip on it, To Grind The Food and Grind It Only. It's not meant to hammer the food, which could plausibly break the pestle. But, because everything is so big, it should be possible to lovingly crush our spices with it... :) And nothing looks the least bit flawed or fragile.
