Metamorphosis: Book review
What would you do if you face an injury that makes you bedridden, and you realise from now on you are nothing but a mere ‘vegetable’ for yourself and your family? Now, a more interesting but probably the same question : What will you do if you wake up someday and realise that you have turned into a bug? Strange right?Well in this literal genius peace by Franz Kafka, the protagonist Gregor Samsa one day woke up and find himself transformed into a bug. Although I found this book dragged at some points and boring at some, there’s a reason why I still call this a genius work. It’s what the story represents metaphorically. People turning into insects, umm.. doesn’t happen everyday! But the sole breadwinner of a family turning into an invalid all of a sudden, complete useless and transforming from the asset to a deep liability, yeah that’s what we might relate to. And that’s what Gregor’s ‘Metamorphosis’ represents. Another great aspect of this book which intrigued me was how the mental transformation of Gregor as well as his family is shown as a result of this big change in his life. Gregor, at first lack any sympathy for himself, he is in mere shock to his transformation and is just trying to adapt to the same. But gradually as the realisation dawns on him, he becomes self sympathetic and also expects care and sympathy from his family. On the contrary, his family is sympathetic to him at first, but as time passes, they grow tired of him. They see him as an inconvenience, as a burden, to the point that they decide it would be better to get rid of him. This is how the mentality of people change if they are burdened by having to taking care of someone who will never be able to speak to them again, who just exists. How brilliantly Kafka has represented feelings like sympathy, anger, sadness, disgust and hopelessness by the ‘insect’ as well as the ‘caretakers’ of the insect. How people are shocked by such things and are not ready to accept it, but when they do face the hard reality as it is what it is, they grieve and then try to adapt to this change and try to do whatever they can. Certain times they might have lingering hope that it might be alright someday, that a miracle will happen and things will go back to normal. But when they see no improvement, the judgement time comes then. Will they continue holding onto what they held dear but causes them tremendous pain now, or will they just let go? Well spoiler alert for the book, the family decides that they had have enough, and they grow tired of the burden who was their loving son and brother a while back. Even Gregor has had enough of his life and loses all will to live, eat or do anything. Another metaphor stated on point. In conclusion, this book is a typical Kafka and if you like dark metaphorical reads, this is for you. Go for it. Although its a book of mere 107 pages, at times it feels dragged and at many times it doesn’t makes any sense. But if you try to see the irony and metaphors and like to read between the lines, you are going to love it and will really appreciate it more.

franz kafka's writings are amazing !!
the book arrived in a pretty well condition. It's actually very small in size, but I think it's already mentioned there.the story, was fantastic. it was very well written. I won't say much because I don't want to spoil. But reading metamorphosis is a must !! I feel like the book cover shouldn't have had a bug design on it, when the book is talking about humans. But that's that. Overall, it was a great experience and can really change one's perspective about life.

Not Penguin
I bought this without looking too closely at it. It is not published by penguin and the quality reflects this. The paper is cheap and thin. The text is printed in poor font and it contains a myriad of comma and other punctuation errors. The book is very wide and long, but very thin, making it awkward to handle. By the penguin version, not this.
