I like a lot of buyers of pure magnesium rods are using them to make hydrogen rich water. I am a little skeptical as to the purity of the rods after reading other reviews. The reviews state that pure magnesium should not oxidize and turn black upon usage, I’ve noticed this myself. Also the product description makes contrary statements 99.99% pure but then state it is a magnesium alloy, which one is it. I’ve attached a photo of F-ber’s rod and another vendors rod. After repeat usage F-ber’s rod is discolored and after every use has a blackish dust that wipes off, the other rod is shiny and not discoloring. I also included their certificate of purity they sent me but I can’t trust that either.

This is my first product review even though I receive items from Amazon multiple times each week. First, I want to say Amazon's customer service is exceptional, even better than my favorite, "go-to" warehouse, and that is saying a lot. Once I received these, I immediately called Amazon, and they issued a prepaid return label. I was shocked by the appearance of the rods. They appeared not to be of the 99.99% purity that was listed in the description.When I ordered the product, I did so without any reviews to read or "questions and answers" to shed light on its quality or its failure to meet buyers' expectations. I took a chance and was greatly disappointed. I want to warn any potential buyers that are looking for magnesium rods to make hydrogen water. Do not purchase these. They arrived dingy, oxidized, dirty-looking, and potentially not 99.99% pure. (I realize the seller states - "the picture may not reflect the actual color of the item.")I've ordered magnesium rods before, and they arrive shiny and brilliant like the chrome of a new car or a new silver coin. There is no way to ascertain the purity of the rods - at least not for me. There was no way I was going to consume hydrogen water made with the rods.Again, Amazon paid return shipping and credited my Visa. Thank you, Amazon, for your superb customer service.If you are going to use the rods for starting a fire/survival, they may work fine. I can't address that, since that wasn't my purpose. I have purchased the 99.95% pure rods from Amazon, that are closer to 99.96% pure and used them to make hydrogen water over the last year. The producer is an well-known supplier and has published all the components/percentages of the elements that are in the rods. The components are listed in the question and answer section. The rods were cheaper, too, and fit the gasketed beer bottles I use to make hydrogen water. I am completely aware that the rods listed on Amazon are not listed for human consumption. I consume them with that knowledge.Just wanted to save any future buyers the disappointment and frustration of repackaging and returning an item. Hope this is helpful to someone.

Turn black when put into vinegar. I had purchased a smaller set from this seller and they were perfect. So I ordered the bigger rods 2 sets. Which are shown in my pictures. The pictures were taken after one attempt to make hydrogen water. When put into vinegar they will turn completely black. Don't buy if you want to make hydrogen water as they may release unwanted toxins.

This item arrived stinking of organic solvent. A solvent may have been used to produce the rods, but it was not cleaned off and even repeated washing (soap and water, vinegar, Everclear) left the solvent stink. Magnesium and magnesium oxide are odorless, so the smell is not from the metal itself or products of oxidation. The metal oxide on the product also was not removed in vinegar, which would work if it were 99%+ pure magnesium. The solvent may have been added to boost the firestarter ability of this product.

I got these to add to my survival bag, and while they aren’t the softest magnesium they work very well. I was able to get nice shavings and started a fire within minutes. Each rod will net you a huge pile of shaving over a long period of time. Great add on for any survival or big out kit

As noted by someone else, when cleaning these in vinegar they get a black covering which must be wiped off, unlike the smaller ones that I had ordered by mistake. This makes me think that these are not the same purity as the others.

Be sure to order the correct Diameter. Work well.

Exactly what I expected and catches a spark with no problem. Burns hot.
