The "fuzzy" or cottony feeling side goes towards your body, the wings fold back over your undergarments and snap, keeping the sleek, decorated side facing away from you. A side note, the colorful decorations can also help give an indication at times how saturated the pad is becoming as they will discolor obviously when the pad gets really filled.

Why wouldnt recommend this for the pool ?

For the same reason you wouldn't wear a disposable pad in the pool. It is absorbent and wearing it in the pool would be much like washing it. It wouldn't absorb the intended fluid because it would be full of pool water.
