Review: I was a huge fan of the anime adaptation, and recently read through the original 10 volume run in preperation for this release. I'm disappointed. A large part of it is my fault. I'd never found the time to read City beyond the first chapter or so, and I was blacking out the new run of Nichijou online for the sake of surprise. I have one major problem. Art style. I hate how rounded everything is; the thick lines; the obvious computer stablisation on every stoke; the chonky limbs that throw off everyone's design (what did they do to you Sakamoto, my boy). What were once exaggerated, raw sketches are replaced with highly iconographic, functional panels. It's all very professionally drawn. That's the issue. This art would look wonderul on a disposable ramen cup, but it's not the Nichijou I know. This could be easily waved away, but the writing isn't there either. Perhaps it's the translation, but often the characters feel awkward and don't feel consistent with how they were acting a volume earlier. Everyone's been reset and half-remembered. The second chapter being related to Go/Soccer (a joke which overstayed its welcome in the original run) should've been the first sign that there's not much new or intesting to do here. Also what's with all the tickling content?? I liked nichijou because it's one of the few works in this genre that doesn't usually have any creepy sneaky fetish vibes. Keiichi has changed a lot, that's clear. His technical ability has improved tremendously and he understands how to create appealing forms which will no doubt have broader appeal. Unfortuntely it just means he's no longer that person who made Nichijou great, and I don't think he can be again. If you didn’t like it, this volume doesn’t change anything. It’s more unhinged than the previous volumes, but that’s for the better.
