A Must for Every Fifth Grader
I used this book (and Love That Dog by the same author) to introduce "poetry" to a small group of gifted fifth graders who have English as a second language.. Like Jack, they did not like poems in the beginning but they sure came to love Jack's humor, observations, emotions, and simple, clear writing style. Ultimately, the kids decided that Jack's poetry was worthy of being signed and posted on every bulletin board in their school.” The book is a fun and easy read. It also and helps kids understand different literary techniques (e.g.,. onomatopoeia, metaphors, alliteration, etc.) as well as the importance of self-expression in their own writing.

So much depends upon
So much dependsuponintroducingpoetrymaking my sonlaughcuddled onthe coughSharon Creech's sequel may just improve on the original (Hate that Dog) for two reasons: 1) the brilliant use of humor and 2) the reuse of some of the poems, rather than breeding contempt, the familiarity is comfortable. In this book, like in Hate that Dog, a boy (Jack) is writing poems to his teacher (Mrs. Stretchberry). Along the way, she introduces him to famous poems, which he bases some of his poems on. He also learns about poetic devices, like alliteration ("creepy cat" and "delightful dog") and onomatopoeia ("pop, pop, popping" in his brain).I homeschool and use this to introduce my son to poetry in an enjoyable way. While he isn't yet inspired to write poems of his own, he loved hearing these books, listening for the sounds of the words, appreciating the words and the meanings behind them. That, for me, was enough to highly recommend this book.

Bought for a cherished friend.
She always loved cats and working with kids. We shared having to adopt a few kittens over the years and I think this meant a lot to her. Great book, great little poems. It is not just for children. Read it aloud or alone... It may be short but you will really take all the words to heart and turn the pages back to the beginning a few times before putting it on the shelf next to several of your favourites.

TE 301 - Hate That Cat
Sharron Creech's Hate That Cat, grasps the reader's attention from the very beginning with her funny, creative, and poetic character, Jack. This free writing poetry offers a story line any reader can enjoy. Jack seems at first hesitant about writing poetry, but after continuing to read and write poetry in class he begins to enjoy it, especially when his teacher wants to post his work on the board.Eventually, Jack also begins to really take interest in the different styles and metaphors a poem can have; as well as things like alliteration and onomatopoeia. While reading the poetry assignments, Jack begins to connect his own life to the different poets' work he is reading, such as William Carlos Williams, T.S. Elliot, and Edgar Allen Poe. He becomes inspired by these poets and applies his own experiences of life to his poetry. First he discusses the mean, black cat that he H-A-T-E-S, and his general dislike for cats all around. To Jack's surprise on Christmas morning he is greeted by a kitten that becomes a member of Jack's family. The irony of the title creates many of Jack's poems throughout the story appealing.Along with opening up about cats though his poetry, Jack also lets the reader become aware of his deaf mother. In Jack's last poem he states how good it felt to be signing to his mother during a school event. At the end of the book, Creech includes the real poems that inspired Jack throughout the story. This example of poems along with the way Jack creates a fun way of learning the different poetry styles creates a great learning experience for readers. Overall, this story is a fun-filled, fascinating story in many aspects from the storyline to the format of Jack's poetry.

Sequel to Love that Dog.
Maybe not quite the charm of the original, but with more rhymes than the first, I enjoyed it equally.
