Q: Do the chickens have large talons?

No. It's a very tiny chicken & is no way near 18 inches as the description stated. I had to get my money back

The one I have doesn't squawk when I squeeze it (maybe a bit of wheeze, but not the squawk). Only when I let it go.

I am sorry for taking so long to respond. I loaned my squawking chicken out to a friend recently and can't "test" it but I'm pretty certain that the squawk comes with the exhale. If there's sound at all on inhale it's not much - it's the exhale that is audible. I used this for a few family gatherings (chicken parties) and it is the life of the party! Some of the squawks come out long and shrilllllling! You'd love it as it brings on lots of laughs!
