lots of plot-twists
A fun fast paced novel, with lots of plot twists.Lost a star because it was a tad ridiculous. Still enjoyable though

A great read
In recent years I have gone right off 'modern' thrillers and whodunnits as they all seem to bang on and on with some terribly angst-ridden detective/lead character who has a complicated personal life...and frankly I got bored (and went back to my first love of Golden Age mysteries). But this - well, despite having some violence etc is nevertheless a rollicking read. All the characters were brilliantly portrayed - personally I enjoy different POV, and in this story using the present tense was a good way to remind us of the speed of events and how they unfolded and changed with the various characters not knowing quite what was going on.The thing that struck me most was the lightness of touch in this story - despite the at times rather gruesome events, all was handled almost with humour...I have tried and tried but cannot think of the right way to describe it. It certainly is not a depressing book that groans along, with the detective navel-gazing and mourning their mental health. The only problem I had was that I was reading it in short bursts and as a result by the end had completely lost track of the twists (and there are plenty!) - so I plan to re-read it soon in one or two long sessions.I enjoyed it enough to buy a couple more of Mr Kernick's books, despite my resolve to avoid modern detective stories!

Fast pace. Brilliant read.
Love this author and have all his books. Action all the way. The plot is good, lots of twists. I'm always sad when I get to the end I want them to go 9n and on.

Was just ok
Didn't find this as good as Simon's other books! Could put it down and wasn't always in a hurry to pick it up.

Great thriller by Simon Kernick
This is a great thriller. It starts off with some kidnappers called the Vanishers where their leader thinks he is a master criminal. We follow the policeman trying to solve the kidnappings. Then we have Becca who defends the indefensible and the two cases cross to add intrigue. This is easy to read but, their are some dark elements that are chilling.I recommend this book and will read more of this author.

Great read.
This story is written in the present tense as it all happens in 48 hours which works for me. I am up to date with all of Simon Kernick’s wonderful books and this one is no exception. Brilliant author. Highly recommended.

The First 48 Hours
The First 48 Hours was an excellent read. There was enough action to keep me well satisfied, interesting characters, a strong storyline, and a little light-hearted adult humour to bring a smile to some of the pages. 5/5 stars for me and I fully recommend it.

Crime Mystery
While I did enjoy this book I had a major concern that it was written from the criminal's point of view - a rogue copper at that. I have a rather naive view that the forces of law and order are working 24/7 to protect us, the gullible public and in no way should a corrupt officer be considered a 'hero' for getting away with fooling not only his fellow officers but also his fellow criminals. I have read and enjoyed many of Simon Kernick's books and hope that this is a one-off work.
