Great Edition
I purchased the Penguin Deluxe edition of Steinbeck's collection. This edition is a beautiful paperback; with a front cover that folds out like a dust jacket. Steinbeck was a great writer - one of the greatest of all time - and this edition allows one to collect several of his works, in one volume. It really is great value and a wonderful addition to your collection. Recommended.

People will not passed by this book!
Love Steinbeck and this volume covers his most important novellas. As I was looking for a book on display I was hoping for a high quality paperback. Mhm, it has novelty but needed to get used to the paper quality. Anyway, I will keep this one as it is a good talking point.

Nice book, nasty page edges
The book itself is fine, but the way they've given the pages a strange jagged edge is horrible. It's meant to be stylish and authentic, but it just looks and feels wrong. What's odd is that the top and bottom edges are nice, normal and straight. Anyway, I'm sure I'll enjoy reading the book, but just don't like the edges to the paper.

The Short Novels of John Steinbeck
This volume of six shorter novels of the author is an ideal introduction to Steinbeck. A little over 600 pages, each story is between 100 and 150 pages. Not all are as well-known as 'Of Mice and Men' and 'Cannery Row', but each one is a gem. If you enjoy these stories you will want to read 'Sweet Thursday' (a sequel to 'Cannery Row'), 'The Pastures of Heaven' and 'The Long Valley' (both short story collections).

Bought as a present for my dad and he's well ...
Bought as a present for my dad and he's well chuffed with it. Arrived promptly and in pristine condition. The text is in a clear print. My only quibble would be with the odd frayed effect on the edge of the pages. Both me and my father think it just looks a bit messy. However, only a minor detail (and not one Amazon can do.anything about).

RELEVANCE TO TODAY
First read by me over 60 years ago; today they have proved to remain even more satisfying and enjoyable.

A great collection of American literature.
Somehow I grew up in the United States of America and never read Steinbeck in high school. We even lived about a mile from Cannary Row when I was in the Army but still never got around to reading Steinbeck. It took until my son was in high school for me to read, "The Grapes of Wrath" but that is another review entirely. So about a month or two ago I decide that it is time to catch up on my Steinbeck. I read "Travel's With Charley" and enjoyed it, but it's was (mostly) non-fiction.I really enjoyed each of the stories in this collection. I did not enjoy reading them as an ebook collection in my Kindle. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy reading, and commenting, on my Kindle. But I'd have preferred to read each story individually on my Kindle.I'm not going to go through and discuss each story. They really are classics and show a glimpse of life long gone.Read Steinbeck!Read every day and read for fun!

Pages are badly cut
The pages of the book are badly cut ! This is the first time I see that especially for a Penguin classics, which are usually of good quality. However the number of stars does not reflect the quality of Steinbeck writing.

Rich in context
Steinbeck's writing is enthralling, as it always transports me to a specific time and place. His stories viscerally dive into the back-breaking reality of the depressed corners of humanity: racism, economic hardships, loneliness, and struggling against adversity. I appreciate that his endings don't fit neatly into a happily-ever-after and rather shed light on the truths of life. These are the stories for folks who feel like they can't get ahead and who see the world for its lack of romance; in that, you'll find camaraderie.

Poor quality of the book, avoid this edition!
Great novels, but poor quality of the book with uneven cut pages. Disappointed!
