A Guide to Wringing Emotional Dissonance Out of Our Characters
Ackerman and Puglisi hit the ball out of the park with their latest installment, The Emotion Amplifier Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide to Character Stress and Volatility. Like their other thesauri in the series, they give solid examples and explanation of how to effectively or ineffectively use the emotion amplifiers and deep dive into emotional dissonance and how it supports plot. They have included such topics as cognitive bias and cognitive decline, lethargy, pregnancy, malnutrition, sleep deprivation, and trauma. Like the Emotion Thesaurus they include physical signs, internal sensations, mental responses, efforts to hide the amplifier, emotions generated, duties or desires that may make it more difficult to complete, and the writer’s tip at the end of each entry. Yet this edition goes deeper.I appreciate their explanations to the upsides of emotional stress and the use of amplifiers to show character growth. My favorite of all are the power verbs listed with each entry. I appreciate that sometimes they are listed alphabetically and in other entries they are in random order. It keeps me from arbitrarily picking the almost right verb for the sentence. This book is a fiction writer's must have.

Essential to the Writer's Toolkit
I own every writer's thesaurus these authors publish. They are INVALUABLE to my process and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Truly outstanding.

Great material as usual for these authors, but not sure this book is really necessary
I have all the Emotion Thesaurus books, so this was an instant buy when I purchased it. However, I'm not sure the content is as necessary for an author, as it really is common sense. A character in pain or stress is going to act more erratically than one who isn't.If you're looking to grab books for your author library and you want to prioritize due to budget, I suggest grabbing the other Emotion Thesaurus books first, and getting this a supplement if you feel you'd like a little more focus incorporating a particular stressful situation and the impact it may bring. This wouldn't be one of my *must haves* for my author bookshelf.

Another fantastic thesaurus to add to my writing toolkit
I'm a huge fan of this whole series, and my copies of The Emotional Wound Thesaurus and The Emotion Thesaurus, in particular, are well-worn, dog-eared, and have at least a dozen bookmarks in each. After spending some time studying the amplifiers (things like pain and fatigue that can amp up emotions), I know this one's going to be the same (I bought the ebook version, but the paperback will be hitting my shelf soon, too!).
