JOSH ROUSE - EMBERS OF TIME (WITH DOWNLOAD) - CD

Pleasing return to form
I've been a Josh Rouse fan since being blown away by "Dressed Up Like Nebraska" back in 1996. His more recent albums were still good but seemed to lack that spark and magic of his earlier recordings. On this 2015 release it sounds like he's more inspired. No, it's not an overly energetic rock album. The mood is more laid back and relaxed; not exactly mellow in the traditional sense, but perhaps more introspective and reflective. There is even a bluesy J.J. Cale vibe on a song or two, a sound which suits Josh Rouse quite well. And, as always, his tuneful songs radiate with melodies that will stick in your head. I guess it's too late to expect the music buying masses (is there even such a group nowadays) to recognize and embrace the music of Josh Rouse, but for us longtime fans, this is one very welcome album.

Sunny rain melodies
My first exposure to Josh was the Dressed Up Like Nebraska disc. Which would not prepare me for the 1972 disc. Which still is my favorite of his. He's a tunesmith who clearly has been deeply influenced by Paul Simon. This disc came as a surprise. To me, it seems he lost some of his mojo when he headed off for Spain. Don't know if he was still there when he cut this but it's grown on me like kudzu and his writing and melodies are as strong as ever. Highly recommended.

So good it will probabbly be ignored
Some artists fade away, others mature and keep turning out excellent, mostly ignored music. This is an album with adult themes about the passage of time and how we change as we age. Sounds pretty dull right? It might have been in lesser hands, but with memorable melodies and clever lyrics it becomes an album you will want to hear again and again.

Rouse Rocks!
I have patiently waited for Josh Rouse to return to my city on tour and was rewarded when "The Embers of Time" was released. I really enjoy the CD and love his writing style and lyrics. It is more similar to his work before it began to have the Spanish vibe. Honestly, my husband and I can't figure out why he isn't more well known than he is. I think he is one of the best singer song writers out there. He didn't disappoint at his concert, either.

Great album!
Just fantastic! I have been a fan of Josh's since the beginning. He kind of lost me on a couple of albums after he moved to Spain but this one is terrific. Definitely recommend!

I almost never write reviews of music, but I ...
I almost never write reviews of music, but I just have to say that this recording gets under your skin and stays with you. Its been my go-to music for almost a year and the layers of the lyrics continue to reveal, reveal, and reveal...it just never gets old. As a huge Josh Rouse fan, this and El Turista are by far my favorites. So for what its worth, I can't say enough about this CD.
