Unfortunately I am having to buy singles of these as - the definitive collection of these I purchased some time ago seems to be flawed!

classic, rathbone and bruce were the best combination for holmes and dr. watson. great to see .love the old black and whites

of the two films on this dvd, "sherlock holmes faces death" ranks as being one of the greatest and most imaginative offerings by "universal" with basil rathbone and nigel bruce. the plot, loosely based upon the conan doyle story "the musgrave ritual," doesn't exactly follow the original source material 100% but that really doesn't matter due to the wonderful pace, narrative, direction and performances during the film. dennis hoey as inspector lestrade is a welcome addition to the cast as he is bumbles his way through the murder case whilst trying to maintain his dignity as a scotland yard inspector, a very good performance. what i enjoy most of all about the film, is the fact that it is imaginative which is thanks to the script. in my opinion, basil rathbone once again proves why he is and will remain the definitive sherlock holmes, a joy to behold. by comparison, "sherlock holmes in washington" suffers from a poor pace and a rather confusing middle section and i had trouble keeping up with the story. another negative for me, is that holmes, watson and the viewers are taken away from the usual and familiar surroundings of baker street to washington D.C, resulting in a distinct lack of atmosphere or imagination. however, george zucco gives an excellent as the main villian.
