Sophie's Universe

You will not regret buying this book ... it’s brilliant.
I learnt the basics of crochet years ago and have used my knowledge occasionally to combine with knitting projects. However I recently went on a beginners crochet workshop to refresh my basic knowledge. Seeing Sophie’s Universe I decided to have a go at this really lovely project. I am glad I did as the pictures and instructions couldn’t be better ..l I have probably completed about a third of the project and it’s so exciting as I love changing the colours and each round is different so you don’t get bored and I have to say it is looking so good and I will love it when it’s all done. If, like me, you are familiar with only basic stitches this is a great book to learn and you will love the work it creates. The only criticism is it’s in US terms but you soon get used to converting and if it had been spiral bound, that would of been a bonus. Lovely book, highly recommended and believe you me you will be hooked once you start ... I will use this book many times not only to make more blankets but to use the middle section for a cushion cover etc ... in fact if I have wool left over I will make a cushion cover to match. You will not regret buying this book.

Highly recommend!
This book is amazing! Step by step written instructions with photos for every single round. The instructions are so clear and easy to follow. I would say a confident beginner could manage to make this blanket. If like me, you get a little bored from the same stitches and patterns, this book is for you. Every round is completely different so it’s like a fun journey/adventure. So addictive! I look forward to coming home from work and doing a few rounds every evening. The book is worth every penny. Very heavy and glossy paper. Also gives options for using different weight yarns and tells you how much you will need.

Wonderful book with fantastic instructions
What a fantastic book. The book provides step bt step instructions for crocheting the heirloom quality blanket Sophie's Universe. This is not a pattern you want to undertake in a dark room watching a TV programme with sub-titles but with some attention these instructions can be followed easily to produce a beautiful blanket. I never needed to watch any video guiidance and purely used the book. Highly recommended!

Worth it!
This is the first review I’ve ever written but I felt like I needed to rave about it. I was debating about buying this as you can watch tutorials for free online or even download written instructions for free but I’m so glad I bought it. The book is fantastic quality and the pictures are so clear and helpful. It’s actually the first written pattern I’ve ever been able to follow with success! So if you’re debating it, treat yourself, it’s worth it :)

What a wonderful book!
I bought this book after seeing it in my textile group. I ahven't had chance to try any of the pattern yet so can't vouch for its accuracy as regards any errors. What I can say is that all photographs are clear and the author is inspirational in her enthusiasm. It is even a good book forsomeone who is fairly amateur at crochet (I am only learning) because all stitches are clearly explained.I am really looking forward to starting a piece of work...only being put off by the price of the Scheepjes yarn so maybe I will just make a cushion cover to start off and then treat myself to a full project for Christmas or birthday...hey I deserve it!!!!

Brilliantly written
So far the only pattern I've ever followed with no issues. Really clearly laid out, tonnes of photos. Will make this over and over again. Well worth the money

Frustrating wordy instructions
I have been wanting to try this pattern for awhile so decided to buy the book rather than the option of downloading for free from the internet in installments. It's a fun pattern to do. I am using up a board of wool I already have. I would say that you need at least a basic knowledge of crochet before attempting although everything is well explained. There is one page devoted to each round. I have marked it down because as an experienced crocheter who is left handed and more than capable of following patterns and charts, I found the detailed instructions overly wordy and frustrating. On each round I have to work out stitch repeat numbers and the instructions from all the words. There is plenty of room on each page and a line which gives the pattern in a conventional form would have greatly enhanced the experience for me and would help the 'adventurous beginners' who this book is apparently aimed at, to learn to read proper patterns. A chart would be helpful too. There's is no mention of understanding the pattern if you are left handed, although left handed instructions are randomly mentioned on page 58, but this is the only place it's mentioned. Lovely pattern, frustrating, wordy instructions.

Fantastic crochet book
I'm fairly new to crocheting having taught myself by watching videos etc, so I was sceptical about purchasing this book as I thought it would be too difficult for me. However the detailed instructions and photos along with online videos help have made this a very enjoyable project and I have learned so much along the way, the crochet terms are US but you soon get the knack of switching to UK. I'm about halfway finished now and am already thinking about doing the larger size next. I highly recommend you give it a try I'm glad I did.
