120 Hz PWM Dimming
When the first of three cheapo GU10 LED lights that I installed about five years ago started flaking out I decided to replace them all with some 'better' versions capable of dimming. Unfortunately out of all the makes and models that I've tried not a single one doesn't bother me after a few hours due to a fatal flaw that I would have thought the lighting industry might have learned from fluorescent magnetic ballasts but apparently not - even at full output (using a normal switch instead of dimmer) they still operate at about a 75% duty cycle (rough guess) with a frequency of 120 Hz. This duty cycle combined with the low frequency makes the stroboscopic effect easily noticeable on either a quickly moving object or quick eye movement. And, of course, the issue gets even worse when dimmed as the duty cycle decreases in order to dim the LED. Also note that 120 Hz on an LED is actually pretty comparable to 60 Hz on a fluorescent for the simple fact that LEDs have a much faster response time than a fluorescent - when you cut power to the LED it goes to zero light output quite quickly whereas the phosphors in a fluorescent continue to glow and give a 'curved' response. It's a relatively trivial cost-adder for the driving circuit to increase the PWM frequency to at least 240 Hz - that would at least put it on par with the drivers for LED backlights on inexpensive monitors. But ideally they'd go a step further and instead use a current control dimming driver - I've found such on a few E27 LED bulbs and recessed fixtures, just not on any GU10 bulbs.
