Let me start by saying this is not an animal hide. This is a synthetic chamois. In my experience, the first and only one of four I have used to date was possibly defective; the center was stuck together like glue. I soaked it in water, and it seemed okay, but after drying about 3/4 of my 18’ skiff, the chamois started falling apart, leaving blue bits everywhere. For me, I will stick with Mammoth microfibers from Chemical Guys or a genuine lamb skin chamois.

After using dozens of different microfiber chamois for drying my car, I find them only satisfactory as compared to a genuine chamois cloth. I wanted to try this Salty Captain Big Cham chamois as the size is a bit larger than the others I have and it comes with a storage container. After my first use, I can say that the product is fair, performing as well as other microfiber chamois I have. That is, it works best after I first get most of the water off of my rinsed vehicle with a lint-free towel or other cloth. Then, when less water is on the car, I use the chamois. With a real leather chamois I can do this in a single step, as that type of chamois is more absorbent as far as I'm concerned. So my overall assessment of this chamois is that it does work well with less residual water on a car (or perhaps boat) surface, is a good size and can be stored (when dry) in its own container, which can be kept in the car for trips to a commercial car wash. I would also say that it is easy to wring out and dries relatively quickly after washing. It's just not as good as a leather chamois.

The towel is like a hard tortilla shell when dry- definitely unusable and will scratch your boat.
