Pocket Oxford English Dictionary

This is not a tiny jeans pocket size dictionary, its about the size of a large novel and would only fit in a large coat pocket. If you need the tiny version, look for the Oxford mini dictionary. This is an ideal handy reference dictionary. The size is easy to hold without being cumbersome. The definitions are short and concise, and the coverage is good for day to day use. The print is a little small, but the print quality make it quite legible. Comparing this to the equivalent Collins dictionary (The Collins Essential English Dictionary) the Oxford Pocket Dictionary is fractionally smaller and contains fewer words, but is significantly better quality. The cover and binding of the Oxford are superior and the paper quality is far better. The Oxford is printed on good quality white paper, the Collins on low grade off white paper. Font size is similar in each, but easier to read in the Oxford due to the superior paper grade.

Its not really a pocket dictionary as others has pointed out it ownt fit in the pocket.But it has lots of modern words and just what I was looking for my daughter who is in Year 5 at school

Thought I would update my diminutive OED with this version, but quickly found that it is nowhere near as good as my really old one. This new version is much bigger but contains much of the stuff I need for crosswords etc.

I ordered this for my 8 year grand daughter who is just starting to want to look up words that she doesn't know the meaning of. However I was very disappointed that what is called a ''pocket'' dictionary is actually full size! I wanted her to be able to carry it around with her in her school bag etc and now she leaves it on her bedroom table and it doesn't get used as much as I hoped. To me, a pocket dictionary is just that - something you can carry around in your pocket! Having said all that, the delivery was very fast and arrived when promised and it arrived in very good condition.

This we bought for our 11 year old grand daughter for Christmas as one of her presents so she hasn't seen this yet. she is into reading stories big-time and experimenting with words and their meanings. Plus she starts senior school next year and it will be more than handy for her to have. We like to think she may regard this as her first 'grown up present'.

Reçu en temps et en heure, en très bon état. Petit bémol, pas de film de protection. Dictionnaire bien construit, définitions compréhensibles. C'est mon 3ème dictionnaire Oxford, pour les mises à jour des mots et de la longue. Bien pour un usage régulier, en version compacte. La version plus complète existe également, mais dans un format plus grand, pour une utilisation fixe (à domicile). Le format de celui-ci est très pratique pour être emmené partout, y compris en examens.

9版を永く使っていたが、10数年たったので、今回の11版を購入した。 9版はソフトカバーであったが（他にもハードカバーがあったかどうかはわからない）、11版ではハードカバーになっている。 この大きさ（縦横は新書サイズだが、厚さが５ｃｍもある）で、ハードカバーというのは、ページをめくるのが、 ソフトカバーに比べて、少々やりにくいと思う。 11版では、IT関係の新しい用語（cloud computing, WiFi など）も出ているが、そんなに新しくない英文を読むときには9版で 十分なので、手になじんで、めくりやすい9版を使っている。 永く使っていると、本書がイギリス英語をメインに編集していることが目立ってくる（語義、語彙の選択、見出しの表記など）。 アメリカ英語に関して、本書の姉妹となる辞書（Pocket Oxford American Dictionary)の新しい版の出版が待たれる。 （Pocket Oxford American Dictionaryは初版が2002年、2版が2008年なので、そろそろ3版が出るのではと、2版を買うのを ひかえて待っています。）
