This book was extremely helpful in preparing for the PE Exam. While the problems are difficult, the solutions are great at taking you through the process of the answer. Every solution is well-thought out, and provides a great detailed analysis. However, there were still some questions I had that were not answered in the solutions. So I emailed Dr. Petro, who responded to me less than an hour later, with a detailed solution. This was incredibly helpful, and I was astounded at how fast he replied to me, even late at night. From that point on, I was emailing back and forth for just about every question I had, and he gave me a timely, detailed answer every single time. It was the best service I have ever received, and he seems to genuinely want to help you understand. I am so thankful for him, and this book, and feel incredibly confident for my upcoming exam. If you are taking the upcoming PE Exam Civil: Structural, I highly advise purchasing this book. And if taking any other PE exam, to purchase Dr. Petro’s study guide for that specific exam. You will not regret the purchase at all. The only regret I have is not buying this book even sooner!!

Finding an updated guide full of problems that equip you for both the exam and your professional career is challenging. Many references are outdated or full of typos, but "The Essential Guide" stands out. If you study this book in detail and review all references, your chances of passing the exam will increase significantly. The Third Edition, updated to the 2024 NCEES Exam Specifications and Design Standards, is an essential resource for PE Civil-Structural Exam preparation. It includes 160 all-depth questions, updated design codes, and an NCEES Handbook version 2.0. This Print 3.5 edition is refined to eliminate typos and errors with additional references based on reader feedback. Key strengths include comprehensive exam topic coverage, structured question presentation, detailed explanations, and alternative solutions using both LRFD and ASD methods. The questions vary in length and difficulty, often surpassing the complexity of the actual exam, providing thorough preparation. Topics covered include structural loads, cross-sectional analysis, temporary structures, material properties, and component design. This book is one of the best study materials you can get for the PE Civil Structural exam. The key is that you have to go through each problem carefully. The majority of the problems will take longer than 6 minutes to solve. This is intentional by the author so that you can be exposed to all of the key concepts needed for the exam. The problem solutions are explained in detail and have been thoroughly reviewed. However, if you do encounter what appears to be an error, the author provides an email in the book that you can message to clear up any doubts. The best way to use this guide is to go through all of the problems carefully, see how your approach compares with the solutions, and then study any gaps you had in your approach versus the solution. This essential guide (along with the newly released online practice exams from Petro Publications) were the key to me passing the PE exam!

I was worried about purchasing this book because some reviews said there were errors in the solutions, however upon my purchase in July 2024, the author has resolved and updated ALL of them! This book is an excellent resource to passing the PE exam. SOME problems are certainly more difficult and challenging than what the actual exam entails however, the objective with this is that it forces you to THINK thus enhancing your understanding of said topics! The solutions are extremely well laid out with step by step procedures and references to each section/manuals used. There are some questions that may feel confusing and overwhelming, however you can email the author and they usually respond within 10 minutes with additional thorough explanations. I’ve asked Dr. Petro over 100 questions at this point, feeling bad about doing so but he is EXTREMELY patient in their email responses and explanations and encouraged to continue emailing questions! (major emphasis on the “extremely patient part”) – I’ve even emailed him pictures of my solutions to questions that I either disagreed with or had difficulty grasping. This is not just a book, it truly is a complete guide and with the author willing to help with questions/comments, it is WAYYYYY BEYOND ITS WORTH! Try the essential guide and make sure to take your time with understanding and grasping ALL of the concepts.

So far so good, some questions are tough and can look confusing, but the author makes sure that you pay attention to code references and handbook provided. Some of the questions are longer than usual, but you feel like you are learning. No questions feel out of reach, they feel tough, I like to try them, I answered some of them correct, some I was close, I am in the last Part of the book so far. If I can' figure them out I ended up learning new things when looking at the answer. The professor was nice enough to send me an updated version with no errata, he answers questions through e-mail if you are lost.

EXCELLENT study guide for someone taking the PE Civil - Structural exam. I recommend this book very highly. I used this book as my primary study method and it definitely helped me pass the exam. The solutions are detailed and allow you to check your work step by step. It may be worth double checking the code versions you’re using and whether they match the versions used in the solutions. The book covers many different codes and topics and was great preparation for the exam. Note that these problems are quite thorough and can be difficult. Even the book addresses this in the introduction. I did not try to solve these problems in 6 minutes, I worked them slowly thoroughly, and a single problem sometimes took 45 minutes. But the process of working through detailed problems was GREAT for my understanding. Use this book to reinforce your knowledge of structural engineering, rather than just studying for the specific format of the exam. In my experience, the problems in this book are more difficult than the actual exam. By studying out of this book I felt very well prepared on exam day. Great study guide, highly recommended!

The layout is interesting, but the content misses the mark on realism. A lot of the 160 questions are way more difficult than they're supposed to be for a timed, 6-minute-per-problem exam format. They focus on deep, niche nuances that are not on the real PE exam. If you want a brutal challenge to test your code navigation it's fine, but it might just stress you out right before test day.

This book is an excellent study source and will adequately prepare you for the PE Civil Structural exam. I passed my PE exam using this book as my primary study source. I also worked through one NCEES practice exam, and reviewed codes as I needed to. This book covers all the topics you need to know for the exam, and provides great solutions to help you understand the answers. A lot of the problems presented in this book are more involved and more difficult than what you will need to solve on the exam. The problems do a great job of covering structural engineering topics and making sure you have an understanding of the concepts behind them. I can also support the other reviews and confirm that Dr. Petro provides exceptional responses via email. I only had one question for him, but was shocked by how quickly I got an answer on a Sunday afternoon.

I highly recommend this book. I passed the PE Civil: Structural exam on my first attempt, and this was my primary study resource, together with the online practice exams available on the author’s new platform. The practice problems and detailed solutions are exceptionally well prepared and cover exactly the concepts you need to understand to pass the exam. They closely reflect the level of knowledge and problem-solving skills required for the actual test. In addition, the author is very responsive and helpful. This is superb practice and reference for those who are preparing for the PE Structural CBT exam. I have had the NCEES and this guide, I would say that the NCEES paper is bit easy compared to the real questions. There are variety of problems presented and gave me a good understanding of the questions. The solutions provided are very detailed with reference to every clause and detailed references. These helped me massively and I have passed the exam at first attempt. I am extremely glad that I gone through the reviews and bought this. The author, Dr. Jacob Petro, is also immensely helpful. I gone through all the questions and was confident going into the exam. Prior to purchasing this book I read lots of reviews on other platform where the advices are to enrol with expensive online courses. I live in the UK and I thought I will give it a go with this book only. And I can honestly say that, if anyone go through the questions (160 questions in the book) and practice thoroughly he/she would be successful. Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Jacob for preparing this amazing practice book.
