Elementary Geography

nice readable edition of a classic
If you are using the Charlotte Mason method, you probably want to teach geography the way Charlotte Mason would have. Good news: you can, because she wrote the book. The lessons are very short, but do not have the patronizing, turn-everything-into-a-sermon tone that was unfortunately prevalent in her day. Each lesson is filled with great information and memorable examples. We use the Ambleside Online curriculum, and this book is recommended for the early elementary years. The ebook is available free online, and the kindle version is inexpensive, but I much prefer physical books, especially for children. I feel we can develop a relationship with the book much better when we hold it in our hands. If everything is on kindle they have a harder time noticing we're switching to a new book or subject. I carried the ebook around on a flash drive for months, meaning to print and bind it at an office supply store, but I never remembered. I was thrilled when this print version was published, especially since the price is very reasonable. The book is a comfortable size; the formatting is clean, simple, and minimalistic; the font is easy to read; and the original illustrations are charming. I was especially intrigued by the few footnotes the editors added with updated information. It is very well done and I'm thrilled I was able to snag a copy.

Any Charlotte Mason follower will love this gentle, conversational book.
I am a homeschool mom and love Charlotte Mason. This is beautifully true to Charlotte and her teachings. I found when reading this book, that it helped me understand her concept and way of teaching more clearly. Just the voice behind the writing showed me how I should speak when I'm teaching my kids. I bought this book for my 8 and 11 year old and we take turns reading it out loud during our hour long "Morning Time" together. It would really be perfect for ages 3 to 10.It is filled with poetry, stories and instruction in a very conversational style. We will be using the poetry for our memorization and copy work. If you hold to Charlottes style of teaching, this is a simple, must have book. From the preface;"An effort is made in the following pages to treat the subject with the sort of sympathetic interest and freshness which attracts children to a new study."Lovely book that will lead children to ask questions and enjoy the study of geography.

Not A Badly Copied Edition
*Edited to say that the edition I'm taking about is from Blue Sky Daisies publishing in case Amazon tries to lump together multiple editions of it like they do with other books. We are using this for our AO curriculum and even if it is free online I like to hold the books in my hand. A lot of the reprinted copies of old books are just bad copies that are either hard to read because the print is too small or too light or they are crooked or the pictures are too dark. This edition was not like that at all as it was completely reformatted, not just copied. The print was a good size and easy to read and the pictures were clear. Of course it's a great tool to teach geography, but you probably know that if you're here.

A new avorite
You can’t get anymore CM than a book written by Charlotte herself. I’m so glad I switched to this from “cm inspired.” Short, sweet, and informative lessons. Added in Holling picture books to supplement. Geography is now the favorite subject. Woo!

It's fun to read
I like that poetry is included. And there are review questions. It gets kids to think. We do visual demonstration while reading the book. It does have outdated information. Such as, saying we cannot see the earth from space, but it was written before man even went to the moon. So, I can educate my kids on new information as well. I've enjoyed this book.

Purely Charlotte Mason style – I’m looking forward to combining the classical methods of memorization and this curriculum to create a gentle yet thorough approach to geography in my home. This is the other very inexpensive and indispensable resource that my kids LOVE doing: Where in the World Geography (where kids actually learn how to memorize geography through drawing) I found it on Etsy

My son enjoyed this book.
Thank you for this great geography study. It gave my son a good basic look at the world and he enjoyed it. Though I didn't, it would have been easy to use this as a basic text to base a deeper unit study from. Lots of ways one could go deeper from this beginning.

Awesome resource!
This is just what we needed for an introduction into geography! It's well written to capture a child's attention-to nature and the geography around them!

Waste of money
I live outside the U.S. and ordered an electronic copy of this book based on its simple and clear language which I thought might cater to non-native English speakers. Just a few pages into this book, I found lengthy poems on shepherds, maidens, heavens, and the English countryside.I don't mean any disrespect, but if this isn't your cup of tea, you might want to steer clear of this book.

An excellent series on Georgraphy
An excellent series on Georgraphy, this is not your average dry, lifeless Geography book, rather one to ignite the senses (Charlotte Mason, that rare gem)
