Some of it was over his head, but he loved filling it out, answering the questions, and coloring in it. We liked it so much that I decided to buy another one for him for our next overseas trip. He is 8 now. (They will be 6 and 10 when we travel.)First, it should be noted that there is no difference between the red, blue, or yellow books, only the dust jacket. This can be good if you want to separate the books by trip or child, but other than the dust jacket there is no difference.Like other reviewers, I would hesitate to call this a "journal" because most of the prompts are more activity oriented. For example, one page says "look up and draw what you see". While all the pages are fun and creative, if you want a true day-by-day journal, then this isn't it. This is great, however, to prompt kids to think outside the box as there are many fun ideas throughout. The art work is mid-century modern inspired, which helps keep the book clean and uncluttered.I do wish there were page numbers. Since the book isn't a straightforward journal, we will skip around matching the page to the day. It would be helpful so I can let the kids know that, for example, today page 58 would be fun to do. This, I feel, was a big miss by the editors.I can see this type of book being great for ages 4-8 or kids who want to document a trip, but don't want to fill out a couple pages everyday. There are many activities for drawing to show what you did.While we plan to use this for Florida/Disney, I think the best use would be a trip to a city or different country. One page has you find someone who lives in your vacation destination and ask them some basic questions. This would be great for New York City, Montreal, London or even camping. Not an journal/activity that's great for a theme park or cruise ship vacation. It could be fun for a stay-cation if you were exploring your home town area or for a social studies unit for homeschool.Overall this is a fun, different way to document a trip. Is it the perfect kid's trip journal? No, but I haven't found that yet either.So buy it if you want an easy way to save some memories.
