I purchased this ring over two years ago and we have been using it alot. It was easy to install and works great. A contractor friend told me to install the ring upside down so that the holes that the gas/flame come out of are facing down into the sand. (makeing sure that there is a 1-2 inch gap between the ring and the sand where the holes are) The reason behind this is that through the winter with rain exposure, water will pool up inside of the unit if the holes are facing up and the water will eventually rust and ruin the ring. By installing the ring holes down, the gas and flame still exit the holes and the effect is the same, but water doesn't get into the ring and corode it.
