They are not joking when they say this is quintessentially the best mic for live vocals
THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE ELECTRO-VOICE ND96 VOCAL MICROPHONE (and the Electro-Voice ND96 vocal microphone only). If you play in a band or otherwise loud stage environment, these are the vocal mics to get. They are not joking when they say this is quintessentially the best mic or as they call it the highest gain before feedback type of mic. We pretty much run/EQ for the EV's mics flat... while having to tweak the Shures and Sennheiser's from band members that temporarily come across our path when we perform. The EV's are the last mics to feedback... if at all! And if they do feedback, it's simply because a lead vocalist drops to the stage floor too close to the monitors... which is instantly controllable once they realize their mistake. We also have the older version (N/D967) of the same model EV's... that are just as good.(NOTE: I have reviewed on Amazon the excellent Electro-Voice ND96 and Electro-Voice N/D967 microphones... Yet I am getting Amazon review requests via email for microphones I've never purchased. Amazon has been known to repurpose a review for a similar item, so just be aware. I see this practice occasionally.) EV makes some Great Mics

Feedback resistant
I was having feedback issues with my sennhaiser e835, e816s and my sure58 whenever I would load up a dirty tube sound on my vocals if the room was small. I was using a battery powered set up with an acoustic singer ve–8. whenever there was a wall or relive surface to bounce the sound back towards the mic the feedback would howl. The ev ND86 does not feedback in the exact same rooms and or circumstances, and I can increase the volume. It is the least feedback or most feedback resistant mike I have used in 40 years of mic usage. You gotta get right up on it to be heard. I had to play with the eq at first. It’s a little deeper ended than the sennhaiser. I had to bring up the treble and mids and drop the base a tiny bit to get a similar sound I like. I’m loving it.

Really good dynamic
This is one of my favorite dynamics and is probably the best of its line. It’s really easy to position and has a fairly bright yet rich enough tone and excellent rejection of feedback for live use. EV takes a “bright mics warm speakers” philosophy to sound reinforcement and that does make a lot of sense for many good reasons. But this mic is great enough for studio use whether on guitar cabs or drums. The ND68 for the fullness of the kick. This mic is head and shoulders better than the wimpy ND44.

Awesome mics for the money. I love them
The EV ND86 is an excellent microphone 🎤 at a low price. I bought 4 for my church's music ministry and they perform great. Excellent voice reproduction and they love them. I even used one to mic a classical guitar and wow I love it too. I'm buying two of them for voice and guitar. I highly recommend it.

Sound and adjusting are great... Durability is an issue.
I have 3 of these mics that I use in my recording studio. I have had success using on 10,12,14 & snare. The tilting head and cardioid pattern make positioning to minimize bleed very easy. Only downfall, one of the adjustment buttons broke, the material is plastic and evidently not very durable. However I am still able to adjust the tilt and since I never move the drums it still works. I would not recommend for live or sound company drum set up because of this durability issue. Also a repair does not seem possible.

pleased with quality and sound of mic
been using an akg d112 for years: and this mic is very different than that mic: glad that I checked this out, very pleased in the sound. Think this may be my main kick mic putting the 112 on stand-by in the ole mic closet- it is good to have at least 2 different mics for one purpose: helps to give more versatility when trying to round out a sound - a good pic for all studios with drums/kick drum

Very Good Snare Mic
This is a very good mic and very flexible. I have very expensive small condenser mics, and wanted something for right up on the snare, works great. with the pad switch the snare isn't overpowering the mic, very clear detailed and transparent. considering using these on my toms.

Beautiful Warm Mic’s 5 Stars !
Amazing Mic’a for My Snare and Toms , combined with my QSC Touchmix-8 Digital Mixer and I feel like I am in a Professional Studio Session with my Yamaha Birch Drumset , Just buy them , they are very warm sounding to my ears and the way I have them setup as jazz toms through my presets on my digital mixer makes me a very happy camper.

Good in a rave lousy on radio
When the sound engineer is a prick and won't turn the mic up because the dj is redlining the system and the soundman won't turn him down out of sycophancy, draw for this mic as it has more power and will not feedback as quick as others. For radio you lose high frquencies though so use the ND 76 or 767a by EV instead.
