Shakespeare's play is transferred to the futuristic urban backdrop of Verona Beach, California. The Montague and Capulet families are embroiled in a long-running feud. When Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio), a Montague, attends a Capulet ball in disguise, he falls in love with the beautiful Juliet (Claire Danes). Although already engaged to Dave Paris, whom she does not love, Juliet vows to marry Romeo. They ask the kindly Father Laurence to perform the ceremony in secret, but bloodshed and tragedy threaten the couple's future together.

My favourite interpretation of Romeo and Juliet
Every time I see it, I find it better than the last viewing. For me, this IS Romeo and Juliet.

I think I believe...
What Romeo & Juliet means to different people will be just that, different. To some, this is a tale of fictional romance; a very well done piece by a legend in Literature and nothing more.To some, this is silly nonsense that doesn't necessarily hold its' place in the real world, perhaps to some in that class, it is dangerous in that it encourages vulnerability and even an unrealistic idea on love, or human relationships...But I am sold. I am a normal modern human-being who, in a fast world, is often only receptive to what can catch my senses by shouting loud enough. But, after hearing and seeing Baz Lurhmann's sexy, modernised (but unadulterated) take on this classic love story, it has almost completely polarised my opinion and (lack of) interest in William Shakespeare, and what he has brought to the World (which as those already there will know, can be a big personal moment). The story is well-set and well-played. It's quite hard to summarise in such a short article quite how large and complicated everything was, but it all comes together in an emotional climax that leaves many shattered at its' end.I'm thankful for the musical score, which tears you along and sweeps you up into the moments that this movie gives you on-screen. The pictures are 2D, but watch this with a 3D sound system, and it'll just suck you up.I'm thankful for the skill of the cast, who managed to dodge the proverbial bullet of having original Shakespearean text in a modern-day setting sound ridiculous (even though for some this may be unavoidable). Moreover, because I was interested, and listening, I can now appreciate the inherent poetry and in-built extra meaning and weight in every famous phrase, instead of what I previously thought was garble.I'm thankful for Baz Lurhmann and co., for their ability to carve out such a fantastic vision that left me, again, shattered; it was absolutely intense. I love a movie that can soak you up, and this take on Romeo + Juliet accomplishes it well. This version of the DVD has a load of extras as well, with takes on how the movie came together, and all of the people behind it. I found the accompanying extras to be quite an eye opener, but watch them after you've seen the movie.Overall, I was blown away by the movie and pleased with the extras that give you a real insight into what went on behind the cameras. I recommend this to people who have anything of a taste for movies. Really, it's that good.

Old story, new interpretation
The pace of this production is FAST!! I feel you would have to be very familier with the intricities of the plot to follow it as the speech is like rappers on caffine. Having said that, the film is very entertaining and the characters believable. I really enjoyed it and have watched it 3 times.

Blu Ray
Firstly, I like Shakespeare anyway but felt this was a great update and modern take on the classic story, others may disagree but, that's my personal opinion. Now to the Blu Ray, I have to say I was expecting more from this Blu Ray, the soundtrack off the top of my head isn't HD DTS, I could be wrong so if it is then it's a very poor DTS soundtrack. I expected much more punch from the music which is part of setting the scenes in this film. No real complaints over the picture however, again felt this could have been better than it is. Would still recommend just feel slightly disappointed by the end result.

pedestrian dialogue delivery at times but nice to look at
This film has a surreal quality about it from start to finish but this then makes some of the dialogue delivery at times pedestrian and under-cooked. The visuals are stunning and the film is full of visual contradictions to keep the watcher perplexed and amused but the task of delivering this play with a modern twist and getting it perfect was pretty much an impossibility from an american studio. The blu-ray version delivers a lush polarised colour palate and is worth the upgrade from DVD. But if like me you found some of the movie a let down, you may want to stick to your DVD. I am giving this 3 stars because overall its a good film but I just can't forgive some of the lack of depth in what should be fabulous words from the bard.

I'll drag thee to a hurdle thither
Forget the Shakespeare; this is a damn good film in its own right - if a record is going to be covered or a film of a classic drama made, then it ought to be done as differently as possible; there are plenty of faithful adaptations of The Bard's most famous play if that's what you want - hats off to Baz Luhrmann for being bold enough to reinvent the classic story of star-crossed lovers. Great performances (especially Harold Perrineau as the mercurial (geddit?) Mercutio, and Claire Danes as a stunning Juliet. Deserves five stars and gets 'em.

Still relevant for today's teens!
A purchase for my 14 year old daughter's birthday. Still looks fresh and fabulous as ever it did. Wish I'd bought her the one that came along with Moulin Rouge to educate her about that as well!! (Romeo and Juliet she had specifically requested).
