Expat experience
Although many years an expat, I have never been to Dubai, but the picture painted by Jan and Mike has set my feet itching to get there. She has an engaging style of writing, making possible clear visual images of the situations she finds herself in. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and recommend it as a good light-hearted read for anybody who wants to be transported to a certainly different world from the humdrum.

A great read.
I too was fortunate enough to spend twelve years in Dubai in the early days, and this book brought back such very happy memories. It is a great read, and Jan describes beautifully the life she led in this magical kingdom. It is done with great humour, and is a Must Read for anyone who has ever had an adventure - or for those who want one.

A fantastic account of life in early Dubai.
A delightful account of a young woman's first experience of living as an ex-pat in primitive Dubai. Her hilarious stories of the trials and tribulations that she had to go through in order to become established amongst her seasoned fellow country-men make it impossible to put this book down. Her wonderful sense of humour always saw her through difficult situations and she has much to offer about the practicalities of living in a country that was yet to become the shoppers' paradise that it is today. Her knowledge of her husband's work and their travels together in Dubai itself and the other Gulf States provide the serious side of the book and, by the time I finished it, I felt that, due to the picture that she painted of it, I knew the Creek as though I had lived there myself. No wonder her heart has never really left Dubai and its people. Her love for it shines through throughout. Well done, Jan Constable, you have written a really unique book that nobody, but yourself could ever have possible done.

An very interesting tale of life in Dubai in the 1970s, spoiled for me by the delivery
I was looking forward to reading this book, because I wanted to discover what life was like in Dubai, some 20 years before I arrived to live in the Arabian Gulf myself. Unfortunately, from the very start, I became annoyed by the patronising tone in which the author, who comes across as pretentious upper-class twit, delivers what is essentially a very interesting and illuminating tale. The over-use of exclamation marks was also unnecessary and annoying!!!!!!!!!!

GUNG HO TALES FROM DUBAI
Gung ho tales from downtown Dubai . . . there wasn't an 'uptown' Dubai when Jan Constable was thrown into a lifestyle she was not in the least bit equipped to deal with but she coped with everything that was thrown at her with fortitude and the stiff upper lip British attitude that she would overcome. Jan's book is written with style and humour and gives a real and interesting insight into the life she lived in Abu Dhabi in the 1970's where circumstances were very spartan especially for such a young English Rose with lots of fascinating facts on what life was really like on the 'Front Line'!. Delightful.
