Hard Ground: Woods Cop Stories

Great Short Stories from the UP of Michigan
This is a different book for Heywood; a compendium of his short stories gleaned from his ride-along time and associations with Conservation Officers and law enforcement in upper Michigan, and the stories they told in the car. I liked it because you can pick it up and read a story, then put it down and look forward to more. Usually anthologies of short stories have some marginal ones, but Heywood's stories are all bell ringers. And this one his hard to put down. I hope he does another book of short stories, because I loved this tone. If you haven't read the Grady Service novels, incidentally, you missed some good books. Search Amazon for Wood Cop, or Joseph Heywood for some super reading

As a Heywood fan, I think this is one of his best works
The short story format is a challenging one, but it would seem to be a great one for Heywood. Much of his novel writing is very dark, but this book has some great humor, touching moments, and just plain great writing.

Another Woods Cop winner from Joseph Haywood
One more great read for those who love Joseph Haywood's writings about the CO's of Michigan's UP. This one is a collection of short stories with various Woods Cop characters, that is an easy read. Grady does show up once but this is a whole new batch of north woods personalities and it works. I laughed out loud and I cried real tears. Perfect reading material while camping out...or if you,re laid up like me at the moment and only wish you were camping out.I can't get enough of these kinds of books. Can't wait for the next Joe Haywood release either.

Missing Grady
I was expecting another Grady Service novel. Instead it's a series of shorts and so far Grady has only been in one of them. There is a lot of dialogue from less than erudite characters. I'm afraid I'm missing the more educated people whether by self or school. I suspect the COs are a little tired of those people too.

Law and Order in the field of Poaching in Michigan
I have, and havr read all his novels and loved them all. They relate a serious subject concerning poching in Michigan's forests and streams. Along the way he has created a wonderful string of colorful charcters doing a wide range of illegal tactics. The tone is serious with colorful flashes of laughter and humor. Once a novel or short story found in Hard Ground is started it is almost imposible to put the book down. Keep them coming Mr. Heywood I am one of your firmest followers!

Really, really like this author's books.
Ah what a good read, excellence is Joseph Heywood's standard publishing. I absolutely can't wait each month to buy another of his books. Watching the progression of the hero throughout his life with all the joys and losses keeps my interest fresh. I will most certainly continue buying this series about this particular group of interesting people.

Short Stories
When I saw the 5 star rating and the recommendations, I jumped the gun and downloaded this book. THEN I realized it was a compilation of mostly rough short stories about Conservation Officers in the Great Lakes area. Many were good, but frustrating to me as I wanted to know more about the characters and the setting as well as the situation. A few were downright weird and off color. My fault, of course, but not a satisfying read.
