Q: what is the size of the box, does it have a thumb ring on the back, and where do you buy replacement 1/4 pans? Amazon calls this a "toy"--true?

This is not a toy as it has professional grade watercolors. It is a small pocket palette, hence the mistake that this is a toy. As far as I know you cannot buy replacement 1/4pans for this. Most artists choose to simply refill the pans with their own choices of watercolors from tubes. I'll be refilling mine with Daniel Smith. It is very comfortable in the hand and very practical for urban sketching. I do use a mini waterbrush rather than the brush it came with.

Definitely 1/4 (quarter) pans, NOT half pans!

Well, unfortunately I am away from the set of these that I own. So I can't just look and answer your question at the moment. As you can see there are normally 18 colors that come with this set. It should be quite obvious if you are missing any of the cakes, BUT the question is just which ones. I will try to remember to check on Monday when I will be in the same proximity as the watercolor set and give you a list of colors. You might check the DR website to see if they have a list for that set.i
