Review: Amazing, I love it! Such a captivating tale of how we are shaped by history, space, our parents’ choices and our own. Set in Shanghai, China, we follow two generations as they live, interact and collide. A virtuoso rendering of how we become who we are and how our dreams and the choices we make profoundly impact us and our loved ones, for better or for worse. Absolutely brilliant! Review: Great book good for my weekend reading

Read this on a whim - and really enjoyed what was a fascinating insight into Chinese society for a westener like myself. Looking to her next novel.

This is a phenomenal read. The characters are fully fleshed and their sorrow and anguish and triumph is oh so palpable. There's a sad reality to the entire plot and an honest reflection on the relationship between East & West, class & equality, failure & triumph. I read the book in one sitting, and even after putting it down, I continue to think about the characters. The book is superbly written but to boot you'll learn about Chinese characters and a worldview that has never lost its relevance. I highly recommend - if only for a story that delves into lives not often shared and narratives not often told.

I am a Chinese. I enjoyed reading this book. It took me right back to my growing up in china. Very realistic observation and character building. Highly recommend.
