Dark Souls: Beyond the Grave (1)

This was a gift for my boyfriend who is a huge Souls-Borne fan. He loves it. It is more of a lore dump and lore guide than art or guide book. This is exactly what he wanted and was looking for.

This book is great if you are a fan of the Dark Souls games. The book covers Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Dark Souls 2 with chapters devoted to the creative process, the gameplay, the universe, the themes, the music, "decryption," and "legacy." You can be sure that the lore is legit because one of the prefaces is written by none other than the VaatiVidya (one of YouTube's authority figures regarding Souls game lore). The best section of the book, however, if you ask me, is the discussion of "Battle Mechanics" detailing the "feeling of weight" in combat, the left and right shoulder buttons of the controller each moving one arm of the player, how to manage stamina effectively, how to dodge attacks by rolling, etc. There's also some thematic black and white art introducing each of the chapters. Overall, it's a 300 page beautiful hardback book and even if you are even mildly interested in action-RPGs like Dark Souls I think that you will find that this is one of the finest books you could have on your gaming book shelf.

While not filled with information that you cannot access else where this product is still a fantastic companion book for any souls Veteran or Newly Chosen Undead

An incredible, in-depth and scholarly take on the first 3 Souls Games. Fascinating read, love this book. Between this and You Died by Keza MacDonald and Jason Killingsworth I’ve been in Souls-Heaven.

Are you a Dark Souls aficionado? If so, GET THIS BOOK! If not, GET THIS BOOK! Nuf said.

O livro é excelente, não só pela abordagem dos jogos em si, mas por todo o processo criativo desde a definição de conceitos até a execução em si. É interessante descobrir como uma nevasca que criou um engarrafamento de carros está diretamente relacionada com a concepção do multiplayer na série Souls, por exemplo. E claro, é interessante ver compiladas as principais teorias sobre o universo dos jogos, com direito a citação das fontes de onde partiram essas teorias. Enfim, é uma obra obrigatória para quem gosta de série Souls.

Ich liebe dieses Game einfach und obwohl ich mit dem Englischen Probleme habe, habe ich mich trotzdem für dieses Buch entschieden. Ich will einfach die Geschichte dahinter erfahren. Einfach mega spannend.

The book will look good on your shelf. If you're someone that, like me, has a fairly good understanding of From Software and their games this book will most likely not contain any new information. I also didn't find it to be particularly well-written, but that's purely subjective.
