Do the speakers need a usb adapter? will they work with (old!) windows 7?

I power them by plugging them in my laptop but you can use a USB plug!!and yes they should work for your laptop

Could be used with a Samsung tablet? It has a mini usb charging point but I have a lead with a mini end and the larger usb size at the other.

for starters this is the older big usb (laptop size) socket. The usb is power only - i doubt the tablet will output enough power to run this. Sound is via a standard headphone port, so you could power it via a charger and then use the headphone socket on the tablet. But that ties you to the wall!

Would they work from a phone charger usb and plug the 3.5 into my phone

Believe the USB only provides the power so although haven’t tried this it seems likely to work. I have plugged Jack into a different device than the USB successfully.
