Spanning twenty-eight years, fifteen albums and over one million records sold Jonathan Butler is undeniably one of the most successful jazz musicians of the last quarter. Born and raised in Cape Town he began singing publicly in the South African townships at the age of seven. At thirteen he was signed to UK based Jive Records and his first single for the label became the first song by a black artist to be played by white radio stations in his homeland. His self - titled debut album, which received a Grammy nomination for the hit "Lies" introduced an outstanding artist who was able to blend his roots in African music with pop sensibilities, a trademark of many albums to follow. Jonathan's self - titled debut release on Rendezvous Entertainment, the new label co-founded by Dave Koz, is arguably Butler's best album since the break out hit "Do You Love Me", which sold over 250,000 units in the U.S. "Jonathan" is a return to the artists South African influences, includes a fresh new vocal interpretation of one of the best - loved songs ever written, "Fire And Rain", and features guest stars Gerald Albright, Rick Braun, Dave Koz and blues artist Jonny Lang.
