So glad it's over
Bad. The basic idea held promise but the actual results lacked sufficient depth and detail, were written in a childish way; although an improvement on the previous two novels, and failed to really cohesively pull together the initial promised dark and gripping thrill. Once again at the very end a whole lot of secret investigation done behind the scenes of the main investigation itself is suddenly revealed and saves the day.Plot holes. How does she survive without food and water? How does a 9 year old a hair's breadth from death remove a nail to get out of a boarded up and supposedly burning building? And once again the lead detective is portrayed as incompetent, bullying and unable to accept female officers.. really don't think it's a very believable storyline anymore and you've repeatedly used it in every book. Time to ring the changes. The paranormal aspect of this one is limited, inconsistent and it doesn't really take us anywhere.. feeling like I wasted my time and energy to read this book..

The suspense is excruciating at times.
Having enjoyed the first two books in this series, there was something different about this. Having got to know Jennifer, I didn’t feel quite so involved in her character and personal life. The story takes place on Blackwater Farm, a place filled with echoes and dark energy and a little girl has gone missing. Jennifer thinks she’s found a thread of communication between Abigail and her twin, Olivia, enabling her to find clues. But this has many layers, complex family issues and past traumas. I would say it’s more of a psychological thriller than anything , where anyone could be a suspect. A good story, though it dragged a bit. I badly wanted to Abigail to be found alive… but the suspense stretched me almost to breaking point and the diary extracts while intriguing, were too numerous and got in the way of the main story, which slightly frustrated me.

The Silent Twin: Where is Abigail?
A disquieting vibe surrounds The Silent Twin, as childhood tragedies and the paranormal collide to leave a haunting impression once more. Yes, Caroline Mitchell has mastered the art of simmering the ever-stewing pot of suspense. This author doesn’t just invite something sinister into her stories, she actively nurtures it.It starts with a game of hide-and-seek. Who would have thought that something so innocent could cause so much misery? One twin is silent and withdrawn, while the other has vanished into thin air. Finding Abigail results in a full blown police search and a escalating social media campaign, which attracts all manner of trolls placing the emphasis of the wrong kind of publicity for the family. Hope for the little girl is fading as precious time and effort is wasted.Given the failed attempts of other officers and the unusual circumstances at Blackwater Farm, DC Jennifer Knight is called to contribute to the investigation. As one part of the team of Operation Moonlight, the hush, hush, paranormal department at Haven nick, her perception will prove more than useful after reports of unearthly phenomena. Her gut also tells her that cracking this case will be hell, as no one is above suspicion.Emboldened by wearing her signature high heels, Knight feels the ominous pressure of the residence almost immediately. As she spends more time with the family she sees the drip, drip, drip of dread seeping from the family’s crumbling lives. The shadow of Blackwater Farm touches everyone, as previous occupants have discovered to their peril. It’s becoming a case of ‘abandon hope all ye who enter here’, as false trails and peculiarities take the enquiries off on unthinkable tangents.Matters are compounded further when Knight’s boss starts breathing down her neck, while the twin’s father, a copper himself, refuses to co-operate fully during the investigation and seems content to watch his wife gliding around in vintage clothing and sporting a surreal ‘everything’s just dandy’ mantra. Not to mention the perfect housekeeper who would give Mary Berry a run for her money! And Olivia, finding solace in silence, her family building a protective barrier around her to keep the authorities at arm’s length. If there’s one trait Knight’s not lacking it’s persistence; gaining that little girl’s trust could be the only way to bring her sister home, dead or alive.Be prepared for a creak, a disembodied voice, and subtle exchanges that are almost missed but not quite what they seem. And read excerpts from a hidden diary that hints at the intent to cause harm and relish in it. The writer’s identity is also concealed, but they’re forever watchful from the dark place they regularly retreat to.The Silent Twin explores bonds that can never be broken, which have the power to relieve or haunt. As the pendulum swings between what is unnervingly odd and dark secrets that cut deep, there’s only one thing that matters – finding Abigail.Note: This is the third book in the DC Jennifer Knight series. While the regular cast have grown and formed stronger relationships over time this book could still be read as a stand alone. However, I believe you’d feel more impact if you appreciate how ‘Operation Moonlight’ was born by reading Don’t Turn Around (Book 1) and Time to Die (Book 2) beforehand.(My thanks to the publisher for providing a digital copy of this book for review, via NetGalley.)

Gripping, incredible & edge of your seat in every way
This is my first book by Caroline Mitchell. I was not sure what to expect. This is book #3 in this series, but I felt like it could be read as a standalone, as I am yet to read the other books in the series and was able to completely follow it. In fact, I was hooked! The story centres around the disappearance of a child. 10-year-old, blonde-haired Abigail, twin sister to Olivia has disappeared while playing hide and seek. Olivia can shed no light on her sister’s disappearance and refuses to speak to anyone. Their mother Joanna, appears to be more concerned with her business than with her children while distraught husband Nick has secrets he wishes to keep hidden, but at what cost? DC Jennifer Knight who is familiar with paranormal experiences is brought in as family liaison officer as there have been unexplained things occurring within the house and sets about uncovering the truth. I wasn't sure I would like the paranormal in a story line but I enjoyed it since it wasn't over the top.All is not as it may seem and set behind the backdrop of creepy Blackwater Farmhouse, the reader is treated to a fast paced novel, full of twists and turns and a large slice of suspense that keep you glued to the book. "The Silent Twin" is very much an edge of your seat read. The story starts off at a steady pace which then escalates as time is running out which had me breathless and feeling frantic.I thought I had the guilty person figured out about half way through and it was who I thought but yet I didn't have all the pieces of the jigsaw till the end. All in all, this is a superb plot with a paranormal thread, a tremendous insight into the frailties and complexities of family and indeed human nature and a gripping tale.

Caroline Mitchell
A real page turner that makes the hair on your arms stand up. This book deals with a parents worst nightmare.Abigail has disappeared and her twin sister as well as her parents are scared and don't know what has happened to her. The story deals with the fear of losing a child and betrayal of the worst kindI was impressed with this third book as it deals with a lot of very spooky scenarios that is part of the farm the family bought, the author has a great ability with writing the paranormal where you can believe that almost anything is possible. An amazing book and another top rated book by Caroline Mitchell. I received this book through netgalley for an honest review. Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this wonderful book from this series as well as the author for writing such an amazing book full of wonder and the mystical

Different, though a jolly good read.
This was the first novel by this Author for me, but definitely not the last. It started pretty slowly, OK - building the story and characters. Easy enough to follow until the paranormal/supernatural cropped up. I have enough Celtish in me to be able to accept this, but it was not what I was expecting, but nevertheless still OK. I found the book to be different - can't think of a better explanation. It was captivating, maddeningly slow in parts, over-explaining in others, but still a jolly good read. Kept me guessing 'whodunnit' until the very end - changed my culprit a few times I must admit, but eventually ended up with the correct one for all the wrong reasons.Well edited. Would recommend this book to all who do not have a closed mind, and to those who do - well maybe you might learn a thing or two. Go grab it. It ticked most of the boxes for me.I will be reading more by this author.

House full of secrets
DC Jennifer Knight is a detective in a paranormal task force. I'm not sure that there is such a thing, but the paranormal aspects didn't bother me unduly. A child is missing and there are anonymous diary entries from a very disturbed person with an axe to grind. That person seemed to be the mother, but of course that was altogether too simple. Tricky ending that kept me guessing. The very ending was a bit too rosy to be believable, but the threat at the end was ominous.

Great Characters but too drawn out
A good storyline but a bit too long winded. I felt the book missed direction at times and was predictable. The basis for the book is a good one and DC Jennifer's character is perfect for the series. Maybe a little more paranormal detective work written into the story and less description of Joanna, would have sharpened the book up to 4 Stars. I do hope there's more books to come in this series.

really good read.
This is the first novel I have read in the DC Jennifer Knight series, but it is a stand alone novel. It is interesting, suspenseful, with good character development, so I actually care what happens to all the characters.I am going to read her first 2 novels in the series.

Gripping
Paranormal novels aren't really my "thing" , that is until I read the three Jennifer Knight books! Just enough spookiness to keep you on edge but not detracting any of the "real" mystery story. I look forward to more, well done Caroline!

A good read throughout.
Story is touching, with intrigue and suspense. Your interest is kept throughout. The 'Diary Notes' threw me off, but they fell in place later.
