Simple but effective
for stitching tough fabric, leather etc. Used to repair a pair of leather boots that had become unstiched.

Awl you need for thick materials
I used this awl to successfully repair a tool bag made of thick 1680D polyester. Not the prettiest result, but effective! Very well made in the USA using a century-old tried and tested design, this tool creates a very strong lockstitch. It's worth practising your technique beforehand - multiple youtube videos are available. I used a piece of A4 paper folded in two to perfect my technique! Be warned - there appear to be numerous far-east knock-offs floating around, often going for not much less than this tool. For the record, I purchased mine via "LifesBetterOutdoors" aka Bosun's Locker Chandlery, Falmouth. Two needles - straight and bent - and a length of thick waxed thread are included.

AWL'S WELL
This is a brilliant little tool. I bought this to sew sheepskin and the job would have been more difficult without it.I am however, only giving it 4 star rating because of the fact that when the loaded spool was finished (which came with the tool) there was no instruction in loading the spool with new thread. It is rather fiddly when done by hand which means that the thread does not unravel cleanly when using the tool again, hence a lot of time is wasted unravelling.

Excellent tool
Sole on son's school shoe had completely come off. Didn't want to buy a new pair as he only had a couple of weeks of secondary left (ever). Bought and used the sewing awl to stitch (rubber sole and leather upper) and good as new. Instructions not great but plenty of YouTube videos around.

Brilliant little stitcher
I knew in the back of my mind that something like this must exist so I looked on Amazon and found the greatest little machine. All my life I have wanted something to repair saddlery, canvas etc and now I have a helpmate for life! So quick and easy to operate and the finished result gets better the more you use it and become familiar. By the time I had repaired my beloved outside reclining chair, I was adept at getting a tidy finish. Very well done for producing and selling this great little item, I can think of at least 20 other jobs for it. Probably the most satisfying money I have ever spent!

Wish I had this years ago!
Very nicely made awl, with handy storage for spare needles and compartment for loads of thread. The chuck engages well, not sloppy and the cutout ensures the thread does not snag as it exits the chuck. Fits comfortably in the hand, with no problems of the thread getting tangled as you stitch. Way better than using a plain awl and thread!

Really great product for smallish tasks
This is a really cool product. Don’t get me wrong, you wouldn’t want to stitch an entire awning with this thing, unless your life is seriously deficient and you want to spend many weeks dedicated to this task. For relatively small jobs, however, it’s bloody brilliant. There’s a small learning curve, but it’s easy to use once to know how to use it. I couldn’t imagine life on my boat without it. Bottom line: buy one!

As good a practical tool as I could wish for
Simple, robust and strong. As good a practical tool as I could wish for. I have already finished a knife sheath and a leather sand bag that have been half finished for months because of the time hand stitching leather takes. My only wish is that a thin needle was an option instead of a curved one. Would highly recommend.
