TM58S Dynamic Supercardioid Vocal Mic, XLR, Locking On/Off Switch

What a great clone to the famous SM58. This mic has the looks, the solid feel, emulating the classic ALMOST to a tee. The quality of this mic is excellent, as Superlux does make some excellent quality and very affordable mic alternatives. While the similarities are eerily similar to the classic SM58, there is ever so slightly higher end frequency "brightness" to this mic. The mic audio is clean, crisp, and virtaully noiseless if you are in an interference free enviornment. This mic really is good, and sounds great. The sound profile is great for vocals and instruments, especially if you want a very slightly bit brighter tone in the upper mid ranges. It's very subtle difference. The mic is solid from the grill to the XLR connection port and the included mic clip as well. There are MANY affordable options on the market at this price range, and I must say that while they do try to compete price-wise, I find that most are not as good, for whatever reason, as these classics or their QUALITY inspired clones. I really am inpressed. There are 2 versions of this Superlux "58 clone", which the model might have an appended "S" in the name, which indicates a Switch. I was skeptical because many cheaper mics that have a switch generally have some sort of annoyance when switching on and off, either is noisy or clicky... this mic however is actually really good when it switches and the audible clicks are virtaully inaudible in my testing. Under the grill you will have a decent looking capsule that has a shock "bounce" to it that the SM58 and 57's have, but this one is more coushiony and not as tight as the classics... This is a good thing, because the handling noise on this mic is excellent, nice an quiet! The only issues I might point out are non-issues really, but these are differences that I notice... One is the grill has a washer you can see in the photo. Nothing wrong at all with it, I'm just pointing that out... Another is, on the SM58 &57, I can unscrew the top half to reveal an internal transformer (infused with hot glue), but this mic I can't seem to even unscrew it, so I can't tell if this mic has a transformer or not. I suspect it might... but I could be wrong. Overall I am pleased with this mic. It really rose above my expectations in quality and sound. Highly recommend if you are on a budget and need something that gets close to the classic.

I like heavy metal casing, it means that you can replace the guts and it takes a beating. I was worried about it being non functional but it works and I can upgrade later.

Superlux brand has just under 40 years in the industry. And many vocalists and musicians have used the TM 58 series, sharing that it met their expectations given its budget price and very fair audio performance. This Superlux mic, from my research and comparing of specifications, is a very known good investment when starting out or building an inventory of audio gear. And yes, it could certainly be called the budget version of the Shure SM58. Its size and specifications, define it as a solid ‘backup mic’ to the Shure SM58, which has been an industry standard for vocalists and sound engineers for both performance and durability. The TM58S, with its built-in mic switch, (as opposed to the TM58 without the switch), do have trade-offs given their pricing. While the TM58 series comes reasonably close to the Shure, they are considered a bit less durable, and more prone to pick up background noise. And per industry opinion, they don’t handle high sound levels as well as the Shure. But again, at its price, and depending on your needs, and with its very capable features and budget price, it may be the right choice for you. And to cover all the bases, there’s also a Shure PGA-58, which is one of Shure’s entry level vocal mic, very similar to the TM-58 series. But general opinion is that while it is a Shure brand product, selling for about twenty dollars more than the Superlux TM58S, comments are that the TM58S has a ‘brighter sound’ for vocals. Bottom line for me, and having reviewed a number of Amazon available microphones in the past five years, I like the Superlux TM-58 series. For its current price point and proven history and reputation, it’s an entry level vocalist’s mic that I’d recommend without concern.

I thought this would be a good microphone replacement but after going through the paces trying to hook everything up it didn't work so I don't really have a review to give based on quality or functionality. It's very Hefty feels great if it worked with my setup it would probably be one of the best microphones but alas I cannot give the review you were looking for.

I ordered the Superlux TM58S dynamic microphone based on its promising features and rugged appearance. The microphone arrived, and it feels incredibly solid. It has a satisfying weight to it. It feels like a tool that could be used for its intended purpose or, in a pinch, as a small hammer. I plugged it into my sound system using a standard XLR cable. The first feature I tested was the locking on/off switch. It clicks into place with authority, preventing any accidental muting during a critical guitar solo or a particularly passionate point in a speech. This is a small but vital detail. I spoke into the microphone. My voice came through the speakers with surprising clarity. The cardioid pattern is effective; it picks up sound from the front and rejects noise from the sides and back. This is perfect for a noisy stage environment. I then tapped on the microphone body to test the shock-mounted capsule. The handling noise was minimal. The microphone is internally protected from the vibrations of my own nervous, clumsy hands. I even shouted into it to test the high SPL handling. It took the volume without distorting, which is crucial for my more emotional performances. This microphone is an excellent piece of equipment for live sound. This is a very good dynamic microphone for the price. It clearly is modeled after the Shure SM58, which is the most popular dynamic vocal microphone for performance, and it comes reasonably close. The casing is sturdy, as is the ball screen that you talk into. There is an on/off switch on the microphone, and it comes with a sturdy mic clip that fits on any standard microphone stand. The mic itself attaches to any standard XLR cable. As far as the sound, it is clear, and the frequency range is quite good. However, when compared side by side with an SM58, the SM58 has a bit more body and volume in the mid and low range. Considering that the SM58 sells for about a third higher in price, this is a quite good substitute if you are on a budget.
