Review: Very useful, very convenient for travel and reference! - This book are a medium size, I compare the size of this book with the Colored Pencil Bible by Alyona Nickelson, and you can see the difference between both. It's convenient for travel, I really like it, because it goes to the point, and it gives you many examples to give textures with colored pencils! It has many practical tips and also shows a brief introduction to the materials, and other interesting things. I recomended at 100%! Review: It has good information but not enough - This is a great little book, but it could have been better. The main reason I gave it five stars is because most of the books out there do not have a how to do page by subjects. The pictures are great but would have liked to see drawings ( step by step), especially on eyes and lips etc. on all ethic people besides white people. After all there are a lot of people out there in the world : Black, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, etc. What you use to color a white person in coloring wouldn't be the same on a black person. It was just what I was looking for in the other three books I bought. My only dilemma is that I wish it had more pages on the subject. The topics are on how to color: people, smooth skin, aged skin, straight, wavy, curly hair etc. Basically only one page per topic. And you know it takes more than one page perhaps that's why the book is small in size as well. There are many topics broken down by sections like animals and insects, fabric and textiles , glass, stone, ceramics, wood and metal, food and beverage, and nature.Sometimes a drawing is better than a picture when your trying to learn how to color; especially in a coloring book.

Great Book
What a great book for those wanting to learn to draw with colored pencils. The steps were pretty precise but I would’ve liked to have seen a few more detailed steps for some of the more difficult techniques. Overall it’s a great book for the budding artist or even for the adult coloring book enthusiast. I learned a lot from it.

For Adult Coloring
I am an adult colorist. I have no desire to be a world class pencil artist going for photo-realistic images, I just wanted my pages to look more real. This is the book for that. It's not a full course on how to be an artist, you simply look up what you're trying to color and there are the steps and colors to use and how to go about it. I'm a beginner with pencils and the results are not foolproof, some will take practice before you get them right. But I saw an improvement in what I was doing from the very first one I tried. I have tried long cat fur, terracotta, cat eyes, flower petals, wrought iron and palm fronds. All made my work look better than it had though none of my first attempts were as good as the authors. The author uses Prismacolor Premier pencils by name and color, not number. I use these pencils so it was no problem for me, but if you're using any other brand you will have an issue. The book offers no color chart to compare Prismacolors to any other brand so you'll be left googling color shades. It seems to me they could have added a color chart or a comparison chart to make the book more accessible to others. There are some items in the book that I don't like and have found better tutorials on You Tube, such as bubbles, which are brown in this book...? Soft bark seems a bit off as well. Some things that I would consider important are not covered at all, such as green leaves (red fall leaves are). The only skin color covered is white. But there is enough here to greatly improve my coloring skills with practice.

Fantastic resource!
I have recently started using colored pencils not just for adult coloring books, but also in my mixed media work. This book has been a game changer! It is laid out very nicely with tools and tricks for artists in the front, and then by section for animal fur, skin, plants etc. Each texture detail spells out in 4 basic steps how to achieve realism, and the colored pictures and pencil color suggestions are great! And just like that- Bammm! I’m a better artist!! For someone like me that cannot afford to take multiple art classes, this book is perfect. It’s a great course bundled up in one easy to follow reference book. I have had it only a short time, but find myself using it a lot. One nice thing about this book is the refresher course on color theory, and how something like obtaining a deeper red color is not necessarily done by just layering on more red. I think this book is a very valuable tool for anyone that likes working with colored pencils and thanks to Denise for sharing her knowledge with the rest of us!

An excellent reference book
This is a great book for referencing textures that you might not always work on. I am reasonably experienced, but somewhat out of practice as I am only just getting back to work after many years elsewhere. The lessons are very short, but well worded and clear. They quickly brought back what I needed to remember and were right on point with no useless digressions. This book is NOT for the beginner unless all you want to draw are the specific textures included. If you cannot draw you may find it difficult to apply this to projects. For someone that might just want to color in coloring books, this will likely not be of much use unless the goal is simple drawings with very busy colors. For someone working on their own original projects this should be very useful though. A very handy reference book to keep the skills sharp or refresh the memory of little used textures.

Just OK
Didn't find this to be of much help. Pictures and text were ok but could have been more detailed and helpful. I returned it.

A perfect book for anyone wanting to hone their colored pencils skills.
What a wonderful helpful book! The directions are concise with colorful pictures to use as guides. I have been using colored pencils for about a year. What I’m realizing more and more as I search out new books to give me a greater understanding is that so much of it is not necessarily exactly how many steps are in the book (as mentioned in some reviews) but the amount of time I take to practice. I believe the author gives enough guidance to make most of the patterns quite doable. I also love that the book is small enough to transport easily. With just a few supplies I can easily work outside, on a plane, or while waiting for an appointment. This book is truly one of a kind for colored pencils and I look forward to ordering the other version of the book for graphite pencils.
