20 Golden Greats

"Glen Campbell's Twenty Golden Greats" Great collection, but wrong title!
"The Best of Glen Campbell" would probably have been a more suitable title for this CD as only 13 of the 20 tracks were hit singles in the US and a mere 7 in Britain. Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights" which rocketed to # 1 stateside in June 1977(# 36 in the UK), is not included, but one has to bear in mind that this compilation is simply the digital configuration of the 1976 vinyl release. Less justifiable, however, is the omission of sizeable Campbell chart contenders such as "I Wanna Live" (US # 36 in 1968), The Everlys' classic "Let It Be Me" - a duet with stable mate Bobbie Gentry - (# 36 stateside in 1969), Oscar nominee "True Grit", (# 35 in America) the title song of the motion picture in which Mr. Campbell starred alongside screen legend John Wayne and "Dream Baby", (# 31 in the US, # 39 in Britain in 1971) Glen Campbell's remake of the 1962 Roy Orbison smash. Glen Campbell's two final US Top 40 hits, Neil Diamond's delightful "Sunflower" and "Can You Fool" from late 1977 and early '78, respectively, are, needless to say, not on the CD. Capitol's choice for fillers is, however, excellent, and many a song might have wound up in the charts if released as singles. My personal favourite is the beautiful (country?) ballad "Too Many Mornings" and Glen Campbell's rendering of the Joni Mitchell standard "Both Sides Now", is just breathtaking! Most of the tracks were orchestrated by Al de Lorey, whose soft, lush arrangements just add to the flavour. The overall sound quality is excellent and every track has been recorded in glorious stereo. There is no information about the star and track annotations are, alas, scarce. I feel that such a great collection of superbly rendered songs by an artist of such magnitude, should have been given the full treatment: thorough overview of career, detailed information on every track: recording date, chart log, composer(s), arranger(s) and/or producers. And how about releasing a revamped "Twenty Golden Greats" with all his hits on it?!

Country Boy
20 Golden greats one of those rare compilation albums where the quality of the songs match the title.Like many people, the only track I really knew of Campbell's was the classic (if not slightly cheesy) rhinestone cowboy. I was also aware of Wichita Lineman but this was from the cover by Jose Feliciano. I decided to check out Campbell's work after seeing a documentary on BBC4.Based on the other reviews I decided to give this album a go. What a great decision. The album is chock full of classics such as "Gentle on my mind", "By The Time I Get to Phoenix", "Galveston" and "Country Boy". There is no bad track on this album and Campbell's voice plus the impeccable arrangements compliment the fine writing.Despite being classed as a country artist, the album has a variety of styles means it stands up to repeat listens. There may be more comprehensive compilations out there (this is only a single disc and was originally released a while ago), however for an overview of one of the true greats in modern music at the very top of his game you cannot go wrong here.

A classic compilation!
I first heard Glen Campbell back in the early 1970's. I was captivated then by the depth and emotion of his singing. I still am.I bought the LP of this CD way back, many years ago. Having a desire to be able to play Campbell's music elsewhere than that dictated by a record player, I bought this disc.Memories came flooding back.Stand out tracks are Rhinestone Cowboy, Whichita Lineman, Honey Come Back, and All I Have to do is Dream.Wonderful stuff. I put him in the same category as David Gates, another fine performer. (His Songbook album I thoroughly recommend)Not one mediocre track on this compilation.

Iam a Rhinestone Cowboy
This CD is brilliant and deserves to amongst the top of the music charts, it is pure Campbell brilliant in a CD. The play back is good, the sound is brilliant and Campbell's voice is pure honey. I have collected his records and CD since I first heard him as a teenager, all the old favourites are on the CD,Rhinestone Cowboy, Galveston, and who can forget Wichita Linesman, just listening to this CD sends me into another time, I was young then and car where flashier. Is it worth buy yes just to hear a great singer.

GLEN AT HIS EARLY BEST
Somewhere in the loft I have this album on vynil ,but when you have several hundred to search through well sometimes it`s just easier to buy again. My interest in Glen Campbell was re-awaken by a recent tv special showing him in the eighties I guess.Viewing him in action reminded me just what a special talent he was and indeed still is despite failing health.I intend to buy more of his work including his latest album that unfortunately will probably be his last. The price at AMAZON of this album 20 Golden Greats is a steal and I urge everyone to buy a copy. You will not be disappointed.
