When it works it's great
This product has a major problem. Right in the middle of cooking my steak the phone disconnected and said I had to update the firmware. I looked and all the devices were up to date. I can't rely on this anymore.

If you only get one kitchen thermometer, get this one
I own several kitchen thermometers. They have different use cases (high temperature, instant read, ...), but came across the Combustion Inc Predictive Thermometer when it popped up on social media and bought it directly from the company on release day. I am happy to see that it now is available from Amazon as well, where more people will buy it.This thermometer is quite different from all the other ones. It works wirelessly over Bluetooth for a start, and impressively the wireless function is good enough to work from inside my oven or my closed gas BBQ. I didn't buy a display with the thermometer but am considering adding it. At the time when the thermometer was released, I was impressed with how quickly the phone app kept gaining features and I was concerned that the display might become obsolete. Now, that a good while has passed, I am less worried and might recommending buying both thermometer and display at the same time. The display can be convenient if placed in the kitchen while I run around with my phone in hand.Having said that, the thermometer is fully functional with just a phone. So, this is mostly a matter of personal preference and workflow. And the fancy wireless mesh network makes sure you always have great reception. The charging case and also the display act as wireless repeaters, so I can see the temperature inside my gas BBQ from inside my living room which is a good ways away. The killer feature though is the large number of temperature sensors. No matter how precisely (or randomly) I place the probe, I can always see the temperature both at the surface and at the coldest spot in my meat. Combine that with the predictive software, and I can perfectly hit medium-rare (my preference) each and every time without having to overcook the outside. I always thought of myself as a pretty proficient cook, but my new thermometer made such a difference in how perfectly and effortlessly I get my proteins done. I love using it. And my guest love that I can give them a much better estimate for when dinner is going to be done -- to the minute, actually! The price is high compared to other thermometers that you might find in your kitchen, but then, you also get a lot more. I am impressed how such a tiny device can hold both a temperature-tolerant battery, a Bluetooth transceiver, and all the temperature sensors. We truly live in the future. If you can only afford a single thermometer, this is the one to get. It is by far the most bang for the buck and will elevate your cooking. Watching the temperature profiles over time really helped me understand why my food cooks the way it does.If you have more money to spend, there are a few things that this thermometer isn't perfectly adapted to. And that's OK. A good instant-read thermometer with a built-in display is inexpensive and can be a better fit for some workflows, when instant is more important than monitoring progression. Fortunately, something like a ThermoPop shouldn't break the bank. And while the Combustion Inc Predictive Thermometer is amazingly resilient and almost impossible to break in any oven or grill, it isn't really suited for monitoring the temperatures of frying oil or for candy making. The exposed yellow end is fine to get really hot, but the metal part has a temperature limit and must be fully inserted into food as opposed to dipped into hot oil. That's fair enough, but it means you might also need to buy a frying thermometer at some point. Fortunately, those don't need to be expensive either. In fact, even a plain old mechanical thermometer will do, as you by definition will be standing right next to it at all times, anyway. So, there you go. Buy the Combustion Inc Predicitive Thermometer, a ThermoPop, and a candy/deep-frying thermometer and you are set. Incidentally, the difference in cost makes this perfect for a Christmas or birthday wishlist, if you have different people wanting to give gifts at different price points.

Accurate?
I’m surprised by the reviews here. I bought this a while ago and finally used it last night for an overnight smoked brisket. It seemed to be working great, I love the technology and number of sensors, but I got suspicious of the 155 reading heading to 160F and double checked with a super accurate Thermapen. It was reading 175F.I tried a second Thermapen same reading. BBQ Guru temp probe aligned with Thermapen. I had the tip inserted exactly as instructed, to the line. The readings were just way off and I had to pull the meat off the cooker, luckily before disaster.
