“Derek overflows with heart” - San Francisco Chronicle “Derek is a thing of beauty. It's mournful, wise and serene” - LA Times “Derek is handled with loving care. Honest and charming” - Washington Post “Heartbreaking and uplifting in the best way possible” - Rolling Stone Derek Noakes is a tender, innocent man whose love for his job and the people he cares for shines through. He works in a retirement home with his mate and landlord Dougie (Karl Pilkington); the home's manager and his best friend Hannah (Kerry Godliman) who is smart, witty and always puts other people first; and there is Derek's slightly odd friend Kev (David Earl) who doesn't work at the home, but is always around. This complete box set includes all episodes from series 1 and 2 and The Special final episode. Derek Series 1 Meet Derek Noakes (Ricky Gervais) he's 49 years old and loves animals, Jesus, Robbie Williams, Deal or No Deal, Secret Millionaire and Britain's Got Talent - but his main hobby is autograph hunting. Derek cares deeply for old people because they're kind and funny and tell him stories about the olden days. Hannah (Kerry Godliman) is a care worker at the home and is Derek's best friend. She's smart, witty and hardworking, but unlucky in love, and like Derek, always puts other people first. Derek Series 2 A year has gone by since we last visited Broad Hill Retirement Home and the old gang is back. Derek Noakes (Ricky Gervais) is still spreading kindness wherever he goes. Kev (David Earl) is still drunk. Dougie (Karl Pilkington) is still grumpy. Hannah (Kerry Godliman) is still the salt of the earth. Wayward youth Vicky (Holli Dempsey) is now working there full-time and providing the residents with free slippers - no questions asked. And there are some new elderly tenants who've since joined the home. Derek's dad moves in, but far from being the sweet old man, he's got whisky in his back pocket and too much lead in his front one. Derek Special Derek, the award winning bittersweet comedy drama returns for a one-off Special. Hannah's relationship with Tom blossoms, since he has found a new job close to home. Vicky finds her true calling in the care industry, whilst Kev realises the true meaning of family. Meanwhile Derek is still dating Tracey, all the while holding the Retirement Home together with his unique viewpoint on life. Funny, poignant, sad. Ricky Gervais at his best Review: An all time favourite - I think this is the best thing Ricky Gervais has done. I bought this box set as a gift because I'm such a fan of the series and I wanted to share the experience! It is beautifully written and the acting is superb. It's incredibly lough out loud funny but near enough every other episode makes me cry! For anyone that is a fan of Afterlife but hasn't seen Derek (and doesn't have access to Netflix!) this is absolutely brilliant and I would definitely recommend it.

Emotional Roller-Coaster
I have never been to sure about Ricky Gervais until now. I thought "Extras" was a great series, but some of the episodes of "The Office" didn't really "Do It" for me. "Derek", however, is sheer brilliance. It has you crying with laughter one minute, and if you have any humanity, you are choking back tears of sadness the next. An "Emotional Roller-Coaster", well worth every penny, and like all the best; it came to an end leaving you wanting more!

Ricky Gervais = AMAZING!
Since the day Derek was shown on TV, we have watched it. The show makes you laugh, makes you cry and really makes you think about the way others live. Ricky Gervais definitely doesn't fail with Derek, if anything it shows the softer side of his work. The added bonus with this box set is the Christmas Special - again, lots of laughs and lots of tears! Would have bought this on blu-ray had it of been available. Buy it, you won't regret it!

Just as groundbreaking as The Office or Extras
Some people had a hard time getting used to Derek; some people classified it as Ricky Gervais getting soft and overly melodramatic. Some people deemed it as an insincere, cynical attempt to tug the heart's strings. All this is wrong. In fact, this may be the most sincere work by Gervais - everybody who reads interviews with the man, or follows his Facebook knows that he is a true believer in human kindness (some people just think that his sometimes bullyish and arrogant public persona is more than just a delightfully wicked act), a deeply engaged defender of causes (like animal rights, a love that propells one of the most poignant Derek episodes) and a truly talented artist. Having the man who created such classics of embarassment comedy as The Office and Extras doing a show about kindness and innocence is not watching a groundbreaking artist softening out; Derek is, indeed, almost punk-ish in the way it dares to defy everybody's expectations of Ricky Gervais and the way it positions itself in a world of once inspired but now repetitive comedy formulas. It's an amazing show that still makes you laugh - it just also makes you cry and, most important of all, think.
