This projector is SVGA as stated, this means its 800x600 which is OK for office uses, but not too much for gaming or movies

Yes. Make sure to check the range of this projector to verify that it will project the right size image for the distance from the screen. This one is a little different than home theater type projectors.

If using a roku stick (hdmi ), do i really need the wxga or only the xga? does using hdmi reduce the output quality?

The PA503W will projector at a WXGA resolution natively while using HDMI connection. If you wish to lower the resolution to XGA, you will need to adjust it through the on-screen display menu, OSD menu.
