## Description

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. Across the far-flung worlds of the Imperium of Mankind, in a galaxy riven by warp storms and unceasing conflict, the armies of Humanity battle for survival. With the Imperium already standing upon the brink of annihilation, the Tyranid hive fleets emerge from the cold void between the stars. The Space Marines stand as the last line of defence between this ravenous alien menace and the beleaguered worlds of the Imperium.

Review: A true all-in-one for new wargamers - Amazing value. Perfect for new players and seasoned veterans alike. Two full combat patrols (albeit pushfit/monopose) and some terrain for the price of one patrol is impossible to beat. What impressed me enough to write this review was the training scenarios. They start small, just two models, and grow in scale as you build more of the box. I was worried the kids would have to build the whole box and get burnt out before getting to try the game but that wasn’t the case. Keep in mind the $100 box has almost all the same models but the librarian and barbs in the ultimate version pay for the difference in themselves. The terrain and higher quality books and mat are all a bonus. The only thing you’re missing are paints which you can get through the $60 starter box and that also completes your infernus and gaunt units.
Review: Cheapest way to get started in Warhammer 40k - The Ultimate Starter Set represents the best value for the money currently in Warhammer 40k. It is also the best way to test out the hobby without a major investment. At worst, this is a stand-alone game similar in price to other board games. At best, it’s a cheap way to get your army started using two of the most popular factions in 40k. Space Marines and the dreaded Tyranids. Pros- Models are push-to-fit. Glue is only required for the terrain pieces. Stand-alone game with expanded rules available for free online. Additional kits can be purchased to expand the gaming experience. Cons- The included units are mid-tier and, while popular for casual games, many are not often included in competitive armies. Though this can change. Unlike most games, the box does not accommodate storage of the finished miniatures. Unlike most games, the miniatures need to be assembled before they can be painted or used. The models are mono-pose and do not include optional weapons or additional poses. This set includes small armies for two of the factions in Warhammer 40k, Space Marines and Tyranids. The Space Marine army consists of a 5-man Terminator squad, a 5-man Infernus squad, a Captain in terminator armor and a Librarian in terminator armor. The Tyranid army includes 20 Termagants, 2 Ripper swarms, 5 Barbgaunts, 3 Von Ryan’s Leapers, a Psychophage and a Winged Tyranid Prime. At the time of writing, the current points value for the Space Marines is 420 with 445 points for the Tyranids. The set also includes two, fold-out game boards each measuring 22x30 inches. The boards are heavy cardstock and 2 sided. One side shows an industrial background and the other a natural setting. The terrain is the Battlezone Fronteris STC Hab Bunker and Stockades set. Additionally, there are a couple of 12-inch rulers, a set of 10- 10mm dice, a game book, as well as a pocket-sized 40k rulebook. The set of slide-off transfers (decals) include regalia for 6 of the core Space Marine chapters- The Ultramarines, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Raven Guard, and the Imperial Fists. The game book includes assembly instructions for the models, some lore for the 2 factions, and a tutorial that teaches you the rules. The game book includes rules for a single mission that detail the objectives of winning the game. This set can also be used with Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol rules which can be downloaded for free from the Warhammer community website and features additional mission types. Additional Combat Patrols for other factions can be purchased as sets or built from existing armies. With specific rules also available for free through the Warhammer 40k community website or the Warhammer 40k app for each set. Because the game board is half the size of a standard 40K battle, and the armies are modest, gameplay is fast and exciting with most games finishing in under an hour. The rules are intuitive and easy to learn. The models are incredibly detailed, and they're fun and easy to assemble. Painting is optional but is also the highlight of the hobby for many people. There is some speculation that this set may be retired next year when Warhammer 40K receives an anticipated edition update. However, it’s worth noting that Games Workshop has changed this set on their website, renaming it the “Combat Patrol Starter Set”. It seems unlikely that they would rebrand an item that only had 6-8 months left on the shelves. And as a final note, regarding the negative reviews, my set arrived in a large desertcart box and was undamaged. I've never had any trouble returning items so potential damage and/or missing parts doesn't concern me. Do be sure to check the contents upon arrival though.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I'm new to 40k. Are the boards making up the playing field big enough for a combat partol game or would I need to get more?**
A: They’re the right size for combat patrol, if you venture into anything bigger you’ll need 2 additional boards to make up the 60x44 area
