I would describe the case part of the watch as a semi-stiff shell that forms around the watch while also being stiff enough to keep it nice and locked in. It doesn't add to much thickness to the watch overall so you don't have to worry about the already bulky Ultra 4 being SUPER THICK. The hardware on the watch like the buckle and the part that holds the excess band down is made of a metal of some sort and it feels nice, the band is also a semi-hard rubber that is alright overall if i had the choice i probably would love the case portion with a different band material but while wearing it for work it causes me no discomfort besides maybe some sweating under the band its pretty easy to clean out when you need to clean the watch module itself and the case/band portion. The case raises a bit over the screen so you can ensure that if you set it down face down the screen wont be touching the surface but more importantly it makes it less likely that you will hit the screen on something unless you direct impact the screen. Now with the things i enjoy out of the way I will tell you somethings that are not as great. The Crown that you use that makes it easier to scroll among other things it is used for is recessed quiet a bit i can see the positive to doing that so it doesn't get damaged but you have to change how you spin the crown instead of putting your finger on the side of the crown and flick scrolling it, it becomes easier to put your finger directly on the surface of the crown and sorta do circles with your finger to spin it. i would say that is the thing that was the biggest inconvenience.
