It is a hardback. But let me just warn you, that this book is not what you might think. It is a how-to for VERY unconvincing stage tricks. I was disappointed to find out that it is only full of ridiculous cheats and common sense cons that wouldnt impress anybody. Like hiding a pencil tip under your thumb nail to write things down on cards during "tricks". Or telling someone to write down a number from one to nine and you can figure out the number.. By watching the pencil eraser closely while they are writing, and giving your best guess. It has no cool or real information. I don't mean to be a downer, but i'd hate to see someone get bamboozled like i did. I hope this helps.

Is this an appropriate book for a Middle Schooler?

Honestly, I don't think so. The book is quite "dense" and is great for someone with good reading skills and some background. For a starter book at this level, I would suggest "Self Working Mental Magic" by Karl Fulves. This book contains many clever and killer effects that are readable and do-able by a middle school student, and would be an excellent stepping stone to the theory and effects of, what I would call, a textbook like "13 Steps". This comment is by a former middle school, now high school teacher, and, I must say, your question is a great one!
