Where was this book when I first moved overseas?!?
Where was this book when I first moved overseas?!? It would have saved me a lot of time, frustration, and cash. Did anyone tell me (or you) which US financial accounts I really, really needed to open BEFORE moving overseas? That there is currently one best brokerage option now that I'm overseas? That I could no longer fund an IRA while overseas? That investing in foreign mutual funds as an American, can result in a huge tax burden? This book isn't about shady offshore investing, get-rich-quick schemes or tax evasion. It's mostly about avoiding the wolves, investing legally and tax efficiently in index funds that are safe for expats, and gradually watching your meager funds grow into something you can afford to live on and retire on. I've seen US expats return to the US with no home, empty pockets, and broken dreams, because they weren't aware of vital tax, planning, and investment principles. That could have been me; it almost was!I've read tons of information on investing and tons of information on expat finances, but I have found nothing like this book or the author's website that combines those two issues. The author was a teacher of personal finance at an international school. You can feel his teaching skills, financial expertise, and expat experience on every page. He's not only informative but also generous with his advice (see his site) and funny too!I repeat: Where was this book when I first moved overseas?!?

Great book for Expats!
As stated in the opening pages of this book, I wish my employer had included a copy of this book in my welcome package. I think it is a must read for any new or experienced expat. Andrew Hallam does a great job detailing the risks, rewards, and the steer clear of's when saving for your future as an expat.I have tried to read several books about investing, and saving for retirement and all have been put down without many pages bent. In contrast, I have eaten this book up in less than a week, the style of writing is very easily understood and the stories coupled with charts and actual evidence Mr Hallam uses keeps you interested and informed.Bottom line, if you are a expat or thinking of investing for your future, do yourself a favour and read this book.

Practical, hands on advice for ordinary people who want to be in charge of their money
The earlier version of this book gave me the confidence and know-how to take ownership of my money management. I'd been feeling paralysed about how to make my retirement funding work for me for several years but Andrew's hands-on, practical advice got me up and running and I haven't looked back. It's great to have this new version with updated information. I'm a bit sorry Andrew has only included one portfolio style this time round (the 'couch potato portfolio'). For those of us who built a portfolio around one of the other model portfolios, it's a bit unnerving that they have now been dropped from this edition.

Changed my life.
This book is an absolutely must-read for everyone, not just expats. Andrew Hallam is not only a great writer but he is a legitimately good person with a willingness and drive to help people. This book contains valuable information in every single chapter, for every nationality I can think of. I can't imagine what my life would be like in the future if I hadn't read this book. Now, I have a clear goal for savings that I'm actively meeting and a great idea of where, how, and when to retire. Possibly the most helpful book I have ever read in my life.

I can't thank the author enough!
If I did not come across this book before I left the U.S. to start teaching at an international school, I believe that I would probably have walked straight into one of the foreign pension scams as I was going to look for a foreign pension plan for my retirement option. I'm so glad that I found the book so I can properly prepare for my retirement. It also answered a lot of tax-related questions that I still had even after consulting an accountant (total waste of money) and researching on my own. I never imagined that I could manage my own retirement fund as I knew nothing about investment, but now I manage index funds. It was the best $12 that I ever invested for my future retirement - thank you Mr. Hallam! :)

Most practical investment book I have read.
Of the 4 investment books I have read the last few weeks this is the most practical of the bunch. As mentioned by other reviews, the book is filled with long stories of Expats that have been robbed by “Financial Salesmen”. It is easy to skip over these and dive into a wealth of knowledge in the book.I found the following very useful.Tax implications for expat or offshore investment.Good international Brokerage firms with their price profiles.Specific index funds or groups of funds that the author feels is good value for money with good diversificationTried and tested advice that is backed up with excellent data and references.Wish I read this book 15 years ago when I started working.Thx Andrew!

IT IS ....OK
The book is a bit repetitive, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for some people. As easy read, with good examples of how not to get ripped off when living in unfamiliar cultures. There are suggested financial advisors for different situations. Would be interested in more info on foreign markets.

Good investment book - for more advanced investors
I considered giving this a 4, only because this really is for more advanced investors. Get Hallam's first book before this one. This is great as a resource for teachers overseas who want a clear idea of what to invest in regarding funds that Hallam recommends. It is clear and well written. I would only give the book a 4 for some of the content as it should be stated as more advanced., however, delivery and product are 5 overall. I will likely buy another one of these since a friend took my copy.
