A real revelation to come across such a wonderful writer quite by accident. The final story of Edgar's childhood in all its bewildered complexity was infinitely moving

A collection of short stories. In one tale, a prisoner of war escapes and ends up becoming a refugee; stuck in a foreign land, tragedy befalls him. The book is fresh and modern. A very moving collection from a great writer. Loved it!

The story about the Menorah is excessively long, but otherwise it's a pleasure to read something from the interwar period - the language is simple and readable in translation and the stories are relatable.

As a lifelong reader I am embarrassed about how long it took me to discover Stefan Zweig. I have now read all his books (some reluctantly, but loved them all) and wish there were a dozen more!
