Review: Always fun to read Dennis Taylor - Another fun book from Dennis Taylor, very fluent writing, good jokes and interesting plot lines. Having said that, I think the characters are shallow and do not evolve over the books, and there are many stereotypical characters and dialogues that don’t feel real. I would not put examples because of spoilers. By the way, is Bill from the mad science lab the same Bill from the skunkworks at the Bobiverse???

I keep rereading.
Maybe I was in a bad mood, but I wasn't impressed with my first read of this. Seemed to be shallow? Then I reread it on a whim and found myself having a great time. On my third reread I have to admit that my initial impression was wrong. This whole series is a good time and the book extends the story in a satisfying way. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Really interesting series. Sure there must be more on way.
Both books have interesting plots, sound science fiction basis and strong characters. This 2nd book has extended the plot strongly by adding territory explored and new characters. The basic plot is the world post Yellowstone volcano super eruption. Introducing parallel Earth's via quantum physics, some students in Nebraska take refuge in another earth without the volcano eruption and no people in it's evolution. The story captures people relationships and government development in this new world. I'm looking forward to a third book I hope is in the works.

Not my cup of tea
Uninspired. I had a feeling from book 1, but book 2 really nailed it. This is bobiverse 2.0 in post apocalyptical Stargate. Now, that might sound like a good thing, but I didn't enjoy it. Personally, due to reading bobiverse, this feels very much like a carbon copy. Straight down to an engineer named Bill blaring an airhorn PA at meetings. The skinny is this: politics, tons of them. Characters not learning their lessons and repeating the same or similar mistakes, and too many major characters. Characters that agree with each other in all forms, but still run around like a herd of cats. My personal take? I'm sick of using politics as a source of tension. I'm tired of characters not killing the bad guys, as they always come back for revenge, and I'm exhausted by the constant and unnecessary POV swaps. They don't add nearly enough to the story to justify them. The editing was on point, it was well written, decently easy to read, and overall: not hot garbage. But it wasn't for me.

not too bad for a sequel
In my experience, sequels rarely match the intensity and excitement of the first book. This one rises to a level one or two steps down from the first book. It’s still an enjoyable read. I did feel that there was a lot of new storylines left unresolved in the sequel that hopefully would be picked up in a third book

Good story, dubious ending.
I waited a long time for this book and wasn't disappointed. My only problem was a plot point. The type of government selected near the end is a recipe for disaster in the future. I agree with the rebels (except for their use of violence) in their opinion of the addition of socialism. In every case, such political systems send in tyranny of one kind or another. It might take a generation or two but that much power leads to corruption. I know that it is only fiction (and can't expect otherwise from the way university students are indoctrated these days) but it happens to be a pet peeve of mine. Aside from that trifle 'Earthside' is a worthy sequel and I look forward to further volumes in the series.

Well written fun
Mr. Tyler has a great voice and is easy to read. Characters are well formed and easy to like and or hate. Great story, very inventive, unlike any I have read before. I believe I will be reading more of his work. Good sense of humor in the right places. The pace of his writing is fast. Just go along with the suspension of disbelief and enjoy the ride😊

Builds on the first book really well. Mr Taylor is one of my favourite authors because all of his books have been interesting & enjoyable reads.

Enjoying the sci fi meets frontier adventure in this series. Just enough mess and contention to keep it interesting but Dennis’ discipline when it comes to characters and plots means the focus doesn’t go down a rabbit hole of over-complications. Can’t wait to see what the crew does next - and where.

I have to say, this is kinda like a certain niche wet dream. The nerds are the superior examples of species now, instead of just Chad. New ideas, overthrowing ideas, and out side the box thinking makes for good reading. Great hbo/Netflix potential

I already found the idea of the portal very interesting. The author has created two exciting books with interesting characters and plot twists from this idea. I am not a native English speaker, but for me the language was on a good level. I was excellently entertained and almost couldn't put the two books down. Within two weeks both were through. I would be very happy if the author would continue the series.

Most chapters are less than two pages long, so just when the story starts to get interesting you are thrown into a different scene and the momentum is lost. The few longer chapters come as a relief from the constant churn, to enjoy the unfolding events and get involved in what is happening, but then it's back to the scattershot structure. This is such an American novel. A lot of the story is about how the struggling colony deals with people who don't fit in, or don't want to: violent thugs, abusive sadists, serial killers, slackers, complainers, and just other people who want to be in charge. Lots and lots of guns. The majority of the colonists are university students in their early twenties who saw boomers grab all the power and then destroy the natural world and the American political system to serve their own narrow interests, so the students reject any attempt by people older than 30 to run the new world order. Nobody wants to return to the poisoned system of "divide and conquer" and "win at all costs" that so marks the current American political system. The Gate Owners committee that ran the rescue from Yellowstone Earth sets up a voting system to discuss and then decide on a new form of government. Everyone gets a vote, old and young alike. A group of boomers then decide that the vote led to a socialist paradise instead of entrenched boomers in a capitalist system, so they stage an armed rebellion. To people outside America, this is not such an interesting story. I loved all of Taylor's other work, but this one got a bit tedious at times.
