My son is 7 years old and has been struggling with his phonemic awareness. I try to help him as much as I can at home and like to have a different variety of tools to help him. He does well with very short words but needs help with anything beyond that.This set includes both CVC words and longer words as well. One side of the card has the word, for word recognition and the other is side is where the child can both write the word and sound out the segments using the red coins as a manipulative.When we opened the box my son was beyond excited to play with these. I did not have time to do so right away so he sat at our kitchen table and played with them by himself. I am so impressed, usually he avoids anything educational but he loved that he could write on these cards and use the coins.Overall my son really likes using these cards which definitely makes it easier on both of us. These cards are a great addition to at home learning.

I am always looking for quality reading activities for my first grade guided reading centers. These Torlam cards pack quite a punch with all of the different skills that are addressed on each one! The use of them needs to be taught to the children before they can use them efficiently. I love everything about it, but have chosen not to have the students write directly on the cards as that is a lot of work for me to get them clean, but they do write the words on their whiteboards. The segmenting of phonemes, blending of sounds, spelling the word, then reading the word by "heart" all follow the methods in the Science of Reading. It is unusual to find so many layers of practice in one kit.
