Review: good solid compass for my needs - I wanted a relatively inexpensive but durable compass for several purposes: hiking with my four-year-old because I'm starting to teach him navigation skills; hiking on my own in unfamiliar areas where I need to rely on trail maps to make sure I don't end up miles away from my objective; and kayaking, to slip into my life vest pocket. These compasses suit all of those purposes well. I have two, and they have held up to my child's enthusiasm as well as my own use. Review: Easy to find, easy to read, affordable. Great for students, scouts, anyone - Works well. Verified with digital compass. Yellow makes it easy to find in pack. Price makes you feel better about giving it to children who tend to lose things.

Bought these for a couple bug out bags. Exactly as advertised. Looks good and works. Nylon cord included that feels and looks cheap. Probably replace that with a higher quality cord or ring for carabiner attachment. But all in it’s a great price for a perfect tool.

Great compass!
Great compass with easy to read numbers. I needed something easy to read so I can teach my youth group to use and orient a compass. Bright colors and large numbers made a great teaching tool.

Degree markings misaligned.
The dial that houses the compass is slightly misaligned and can’t be corrected. This creates a small but irritating deviation that could compound to a significant error over a long course. Quality otherwise good— clear markings and brightly colored base. Compass arrived promptly. I would feel comfortable using this for a short trip, but would want something accurate for long distance or desert navigation.

Compact, lightweight and easy to read
This compass worked perfectly. It is the perfect size, compact and very light. There is even a lanyard attachment if you wanted to carry it around your neck. There is also a built in ruler (in and cm), along with a magnifying lens. This multipurpose tool is a great deal for the money.

Compass is responsive, easy to use, and is a splendid teaching tool. Seems like modern tech renders a compass into the dustbin of obsolescence, but make no mistake about the importance of carrying this into places unknown. Tech breaks, batteries die, and dependability equals one over complexity to the fifth power. (D=1/c^5) Heartily recommend this tried and true compass.

I have a Suunto MC-2 but wanted a cheap compass for a bugout bag. I decided on this compass. I can see what people are referring to when they say you twist the dial the needle moves. It does. My compass defintely has fluid in the capsule: when I shine a very focused beam of light into the capsule I can see it disperse in the fluid. if there was no fluid in there I wouldnt see it. I believe they are using an oil of some type. This is why when you turn the dial the needle turns because you are also turning the fluid. Having an oil in there is good because it will stabilize the needle better. However, the dial will need to be turned slowly if you dont want the drag the needle with it. also this is why you have to give it a few gentle shakes to get the needle to align to mag north again. At least this is how my compass is working. Otherwise I compared it against the MC-2 and my iphone compass and it was showing very close to the same mag north, so I consider it accurate. The need to fiddle with this compass a bit to work with the needle is actually not a bad thing for people to learn when they first learn to use a compass. However, in an emergency setting with a bugout bag, the last thing I'd want to do is mess with a compass. I opted to put the MC-2 into the bugout bag and use this compass as the one I pack. Frankly I rarely need a compass so I think this is the right way to do it in my case. This compass is fine, oil filled capule, no bubbles and decently accurate. just quirky and a good compass to learn on. it does not have a magnetic declination adjustment and that was another reaons to use the MC-2 in the bugout because its easier to use than this compass where you'd have to mentally compensate for the mag declination. There is a Suunto that is a similar price and frankly I think they'd both be similar in terms of quality. My 4/5 rating is based on the price and on the expectations set when I bought it compared to what I got. My rating is NOT rating this as compass. For that I'd give it 2/5. The MC-2 I'd give 4/5. Hope that helps (ps the MC-2 is 4x the price of this one).
