Heartbeat - The Complete First Series [DVD] [1992]

Programs made in 21st century with class
This is one of the few programs made in 21st century that has any class, with the people, the acting, script and scenery. I suppose if you liked the US "Northern Exposer" series (like I did) you will love Heartbeat, and I also like the Heartbeat music CD series, some great music never played on New Zealand radio, what a bonus. What a sad world we are heading for, NO more quality programs left on "free to air TV" with the termination of Heartbeat, and that was played on Saturday afternoon at 1pm of all things in New Zealand. The TV guide filled with other programs using that universal four letter word, not to mention naked bodies. There is no story in todays programs - just computerized graphics bull (like, how many times do you see players walking across a short bridge going over a bottomless pit?), and there is no comedy made any longer the only thing that laughs is the laughing machine, and the new programs are so low budget they employ drunk camera people, but that is what the viewers love today rubbish! I have a funny feeling I am going to be one of the last people to join the "digital TV" age if I do join it after analogue TV switches off in New Zealand during November 2013, and the way New Zealand free to air TV is going by that time will not miss a thing in 2014.But what a great surprise I visited Amazon.uk for some reason to learn Heartbeat season one was out and ordered it the same day on 30th September and had it in my hands by 5th October the surprise was I am sure I did not use express mail, the email said "estimated arrival date: October 21, ..." . So I will be switching off the TV more often to watch the remaining two DVDs in this series one by early November so I am ready for season two.

Just Brilliant!
The DVD release has been a long time coming, but well worth the wait. For me the early series' with Nick Berry as PC Rowan were always my favourites and now I can watch them over and over again. The many comical moments between the characters of Blaketon, Rowan, Ventress, Bellamy and Greengrass are just brilliant. TV does'nt get much better than this!I find the sound and picture quality of the DVD's to be very good quality and to my satisfaction. Many of the original 60's music tracks have sadly been edited out, but have been replaced with very good quality cover versions. According to ITV this had to be done due to some music copyright issues which originally prevented the series being released on DVD at an earlier date, I guess that this was the only way the DVD release could be achieved. My one and only grumble is at the increasing price of the DVD's when compared to that of other drama DVD releases, but I'm assuming that this may be due to the increase in episodes on the later series (requiring more discs), and also, possibly to cover the costs of editing some of the 60's music tracks?Overall, I'm a Heartbeat fan and I'm well chuffed with the DVD releases to date from series one to series five and I cant wait for the rest to be relesed.Would I recommend the DVD's to you?... Oh yes, definitely!

A series from way back? Yes, it’s brilliant!
So good to watch the very early days of Heartbeat. Great actors, some of days gone by. Arrived promptly. Really pleased with this purchase.

heartbeat series 1
At long last the whole series 1 and 2 (and soon 3) are available after all these years. In my opinion the early series were the best with realistic and gripping story lines, great scenery, cars and 60's music. I saw the very small print on the sleeve mentioning that the music on the DVD may not be as televised. I have so far spotted a very poor Beatles cover of a song and hope that there are not too many. Seems odd that televised on ITV3 can still retain the original music yet the DVD has overdubbed ones. The quality of the picture is somewhat flat and the colours are not as vibrant as the televised version. Having said this the stories remain as the original with no cuts which is what could have been done with End of Part One, Part 2 etc. Come on Network it cannot take too much effort to remove this unless it was minimal outlay for maximum return (surely not cynical me!)On the whole if you are looking to put back on your screen some decent British television then buy this. Maybe the people at Network will read these comments and may make a better job of later series.

HEARTBEAT HOTEL
This is like finding an old photo in the loft which suddely takes you back to another time. The great interest here is how the characters and setting have been developed so effectively by the writers, actors and production team. Although this first series looks like it was a vehicle for the acting talent of Nick Berry, the series became a force in itself, the interest being spread amongst all the regular characters.A visit last year to Aidensfield (Goathland, in reality) showed just how enduring is the interest created by this long-running series. It's Sunday night viewing at its best and this dvd set is a worthy attic discovery.

"Heartbeat - why do you miss when my baby kisses me ..."
Love it, Love it, Love it! Wonderful, family-safe and great stories, acting and chemistry! It is no wonder this series ran for 18 years, and then had fans lining up to petition for more. It has great music, a cute couple, a loveable rouge and a tough Sargent--who could ask for a better mix of characters. I purchased the UK version, as I have a DVD multi-region player, so I can get as many seasons as they have released. I am on Season 2 so far and loving it. The plots are well written, I LOVE Greengrass with his winkin & blinkin ~ and Kate & Nick are darling together. If you like clean family-friendly viewing--so far I would say this series is a winner.Word of warning, once you start watching....you will not be able to stop hummming.... "Heartbeat - why do you miss when my baby kisses me"....

Very Enjoyable
Arrived fine from second hand dealer. This is region 2 and I am in the US, so only works if you have a multi-region player, as I do. This is a show to get hooked on. I'm not big on crime dramas but this one is an exception. If you are in the US and have not seen it but have a region 2 player, give it a shot. It was big in England for a reason!
