As new parents we weren't certain what all we needed or what would be useful. I bought one of these to keep by the main diaper changing table. After 5 months I have to say it has turned out to be a great purchase and an important, useful part of taking care of a baby.The basics of it are simple to understand, you step on a pedal and it opens and you throw the diaper in, you take your foot off the pedal and the lid plus an internal door closes pinching the bag mostly closed to keep the smell in. It works pretty well.The part I wasn't certain about but am really pleased with is how the bags and emptying of it works. The bag refills last longer than I expected and are pretty cheap if you buy generic store brand refills at places like Target or Walmart. The bag refill looks like a plastic ring that simply sits in the top. The bag itself is one long continuous tube that goes down into the Diaper Genie and is tied off at the bottom. When it gets full, you open the front of the genie, pinch off the bag and cut it at the top with the internal shielded cutter, throw it away, then pull down another length of bag from the refill ring and tie it off at the bottom. It's more simple than it sounds and works great because the bag never has to be open, all the smell and mess stays contained during the emptying process.It is your typical plastic manufacture (probably China) and when it gets overly full it can stick when you try to open it or when you take your foot off the pedal, so for that I can't give it a full 5 stars.There are smaller, less expensive ones, but they fill up fast and I appreciate the larger capacity (less frequent emptying) of this model and definitely recommend it.
