Evil Dead Rise (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray)

"Evil Dead Rise" was released theatrically on April 21, 2023, grossing $147 million worldwide against a production of $15-$19 million. It was written and directed by Lee Cronin starring Lily Sullivan & Alyssa Sutherland. It is the fifth film in the long running Evil Dead series. Critical response was very positive overall. While I liked "Evil Dead Rise" when I initially saw it back in 2023, I also thought that it didn't feel like an Evil Dead film despite all of the expected ingredients that you would expect to see in a film from that series. I then realized via interviews with the producers is that this is exactly what they wanted with this film was to take the series in a fresh direction. Subsequent viewings increased my appreciation for the film and I think that everyone involved knocked it out of the park. It is gruesome, gory, tense and darkly funny in spots. The acting is very strong from the entire cast and the sound design is on point as well. Warner Brothers first brought "Evil Dead Rise" to 4K back in 2023 in a bare bones HDR10 only release. They would then reissue it shortly thereafter in a steelbook release that added a commentary track but the steelbook release was also HDR10 only and still pretty barebones. Arrow Video came to the rescue providing the film a lavish 4K limited edition release that adds Dolby Vision in addition to the previous HDR10 grading in the prior 4K release. While the HDR10 grading looks terrific, the addition of Dolby Vision kicks things up a notch with even more inky black levels and contrast which helps as this a very dark film from a cinematography sense. The film is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.39:1. I also noticed that the Arrow Video 4K release has better encoding with a higher bit rate than the Warner Brothers 4K. Another stellar job by Arrow Video. Audio is presented in the lriginal DTS-HD MA 5.1 and Dolby Atmos audio options. English subtitles are included for the hearing impaired. The audio options mirror the prior 4K release. Where the Arrow Video 4K release excels is regarding the special features which are substantial with the prior commentary track being carried over. One of the best horror movies of 2023 and their remergence of the Evil Dead franchise with very little CGI, really good story and good cast, gave me a good scare even for the 2023 horror film, this movie gave me a 1980s feel of that era which is good because I'm a big '80s fan of horror films. The item was exactly what it was when it was delivered out of the package new I will keep it.

Who doesn't love the Evil Dead franchise? The first Evil Dead is definitely one of the greatest horror films of all time, Evil Dead 2 is pretty good with a nice mix of horror and comedy, Army of Darkness is a neat fantasy adventure with some funny slapstick, and the remake is awesomely underrated and in my opinion is one of the best remakes ever. There was also that show Ash vs. Evil Dead that was pretty good, but kind of fizzled out near the end. I was a little hesitant when I heard there was going to be a new movie, mainly because they don't specify where this one takes place in the franchise. Is it in the main Evil Dead universe of the remake's? But I was won over when I saw the trailer for it, well admittedly the second trailer. So the movie itself is actually pretty good, despite weirdly beginning with an opening stinger that takes place a day after the events of the main film with characters who don't contribute in any way to the plot of said film. The beginning is kind of a slog through until the mother becomes possessed. The acting is decent and the characters are kind of one note, but the actress who plays the mom Ellie terrifyingly steals the show when she becomes a Deadite. This movie goes really insane and gory with some good practical effects (sure there's some CGI) and some creepy scares, but I could've gone without the sharp music stings every time there's a jump scare or whenever a Deadite makes a slight move. They did miss an opportunity to have this creepy Jesus statue in the movie come to life but I digress. Overall this movie is pretty good. It definitely hits a lot of the Evil Dead vibes, and I was thoroughly surprised to find out that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell where executive producers for the movie so that gives it some bonus points. It's probably not the best, but it's still pretty groovy.

The movie is great and the case itself came in perfect condition, but for some reason the sheet that is meant to have a redemption code and QR code didn't have either printed on it and is just totally blank. This would be a 5/5 review if it came with the code, but that'll cost it two stars. I got this on a great deal, but if I bought it at full price and it didn't come with the code I'd probably be pretty annoyed.

I'll admit, I'm biased: I have yet to see an Evil Dead movie I didn't like, although the reasons for that vary from film to film. This is higher-budget than any of the Sam Raimi classics, and faster-paced than the 2013 Evil Dead, but seems to pack as much blood and gore into its 96 minutes as any of the others. The story is simple, and follows the same outline as the other Evil Deads. Someone finds the forbidden book, someone intones the unholy incantation and summons the ancient demons, and Bad Things happen to the people in the vicinity. The variety comes from finding out how many different bloody circumstances you can hang on the same framework. Aside from the prologue (which pays tribute to Wuthering Heights and it's ghost-story narrative frame), the action takes place in a nearly-abandoned and soon-to-be-demolished apartment building. Guitar technician Beth, having just been hit with some life-changing news, visits her sister Ellie and Ellie's three kids, in an apartment complex that looks like it should have been condemned a decade ago. Although they clearly share a familial bond, the two sisters do not get along well. Ellie repeatedly refers to Beth as a "Groupie", disrespecting her actual job, and Beth has been so absent from Ellie's life that she learns of her separation from her husband months after the fact. A mild earthquake reveals a crack in the foundation of the building, uncovering a vault where the Necronomicon—err, the "Naturom Demonto"—has been hidden. One of the teen children opens it and plays the accompanying vinyl recording, and the spirits arise. Their first victim is Ellie, who becomes possessed while in the elevator, and things go downhill from there, leading to a climax in the parking garage between the survivors and a hideous, hybrid monster. In between, this movie pours on the red sauce, and displays other body horror elements that are a trademark of the franchise. Alyssa Sutherland is creepy as the possessed mother, and Lily Sullivan is convincingly bad-ass as her survive-at-all-costs sister. Even the young actors do well in this movie, which is always dicey, especially in a movie as intense as this. The pacing is perfect and the gore effects are revolting. This isn't for everyone, but if you've read this far, you know what kind of movie it aims to be, and I am pleased to report it hits its target dead center.

On en a pour son argent, l'esprit gore est bel et bien respecté avec même une légère pointe de brefs rares moments drôles (très brefs en fait ). C'est bien du Evil dead avec pas mal de références à la franchise (la tête qui parle, la tronçonneuse, les giclées de sang, le livre des morts...). Mais c'est bien plus moderne et les multiples effets spéciaux sont ici parfaitement huilés. Le film parvient même à être un peu flippant surtout dans la dernière ligne droite. Bref, une réel bon moment délirant et sanglant dans l'esprit de la franchise. Côté technique, le disque 4K UHD fait carton plein. Image 4K magnifique et très détaillée malgré les éclairages artificiels et les scènes sous éclairées. Les visages rouges de sang dans le final sont splendides. Le piqué UHD est bien là de même que la gestion parfaite des couleurs. Le HDR sait également exploiter les brillances à nouveau notamment dans les liquides (sang...). côté son c'est également lourd et précis à la fois. Mes grosses enceintes en ont eu du plaisir. Hautement recommandé pour les fans du genre ou de la franchise.
